FULTON, Mo. – The No. 9 William Woods University men's tennis team defeated McPherson College Sunday afternoon, 5-2. The Owls move to 5-2 on the season.
MC won the first doubles point in the No. 1 spot, but the Owls came back with a 7-6 win in the No. 3 doubles by
Patrick Shelepov and
Sam Bird.
Jesus Amezcua and
Zach Frisbie in the No. 2 doubles won in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4) to secure the doubles point.
Aaron Westerlund grabbed a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 1 singles and Shelepov won 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles to put the Owls up 3-0.
MC grabbed their first point in the No. 4 singles, but Amezcua finished with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (1-0) win in the No. 3 singles to give the Owls a 4-1 lead.
Frisbie won a 6-3, 6-4 decision in the No. 5 spot to earn the Owls' final point of the match.
Jack Campbell battled hard in the No. 6 singles but came up short in the tiebreaker, 6-1, 6-7, 17-15.
The Owls travel to No. 11 Lindsey Wilson on Friday, March 13, for a 2:30 p.m. start.
