Murphy centers his life around golf. He has played in 125 events on various professional tours with two wins and has done individual lessons for the past 10 years.
In 2024-25, Murphy earned AMC Men's Golf Coach of the Year, his men's team won the AMC Championship, nine team tournament titles and placed 14th in the NAIA National Championships and his men's players received AMC Freshman of the Year and a conference-best nine All-AMC honorees (three first-team, two second-team and four honorable mention). WWU's women's team had two top-three team finishes and two All-AMC selections (two honorable mention) in 24-25.Â
In the Owls' first season in the Heart of America Athletic Conference (2025-26), Murphy led the Woods to nine team titles and a fourth place finish in the Heart Championship on the men's side. The team also saw an individual qualifier for the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship in Spencer Worley, who is surely set to be inducted into the William Woods Athletics Hall of Fame as one of the most decorated men's golfers in the program's storied history. In women's golf, the program grew substantially from a year prior, finishing top five in every tournament they played. The young Owls team looks to grow in their second year in the Heart, behind strong depth on both sides.Â

He was named the 2008-09 Heartland Conference Player of the Year and was a two-time All-Heartland Conference First Team selection. He graduated in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in business.Â
