Michael Ward

I’m Coach Mike Ward, born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. I’m a proud father of three boys and have a deep passion for basketball, mentoring youth, and helping players achieve their goals both on and off the court.

Playing Career:
I began my basketball journey at Hogan Prep Academy, graduating in 2003. After high school, I moved to Seattle, Washington, where I attended South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC). At SPSCC, I earned All-League honors and led my team in scoring, rebounds, and steals.
Following my time at SPSCC, I earned a full-ride scholarship to Evergreen State College, where I helped lead the team to back-to-back 20+ win seasons, a conference finals appearance, and a trip to the NAIA National Tournament Sweet 16.
After graduating from Evergreen with a bachelor’s degree, I continued my playing career both nationally and internationally. I competed professionally in Barcelona and participated in international tours, including a basketball tour in China.

Coaching & Training Career:
After my playing career, I transitioned into coaching and skill development. I began by launching a youth basketball program in Lacey, Washington, helping players of all levels—from beginners to elite athletes—improve their skills and grow their love for the game.
In 2018, I founded West Academy, a basketball academy and AAU program designed to train, mentor, and provide exposure for youth athletes pursuing the next step in their athletic journey. Under my leadership, West Academy became the largest AAU program in Thuston County, serving over 100+ youth athletes. As Director, I focused on building a family environment that nurtures growth both on the court and in life.
Coaching Experience
  • 10+ years coaching AAU basketball
  • 6+ years coaching middle and high school basketball
  • 2 years of coaching at the collegiate level
I’m excited to bring my experience, passion, and leadership to William Woods University.
Let’s go, Owls!
