(KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 31)--The William Woods University men's soccer team opened the 2010 season with a tie at Avila University on Tuesday. The Owls and Eagles played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime.
The Owls scored the first goal of the match in the 20th minute. Junior
Marcelo Carreiro (Curtiba, Brazil) beat a defender, and the goalkeeper, to give the Owls an early lead.
Avila scored on a header from Dustin Deisher in the 87th minute to tie the game, and eventually forced overtime. Neither team could find the back of the net during the two 10-minute overtime periods.
Avila (0-0-1) recorded seven shots, three on goal. William Woods (0-0-1) recorded 12 shots, six on goal.
Freshman
Sean Geoghegan (Naas County Kildare, Ireland) had one save for the Owls.
WWU will return to action on September 4 and 5. The Owls will play Bethel College (Kans.) and the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, Kans. William Woods will play Bethel at 4 p.m. on Saturday, and the University of St. Mary at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
