(FULTON, Mo., Sept. 21)--The William Woods University men's soccer team defeated visiting Ottawa University on Tuesday night. The Owls defeated the Braves 2-0. WWU runs its unbeaten streak to six matches.
WWU scored both of its goals in the first half of play. Junior
Marcelo Carreiro recorded his eighth goal of the season in the fifth minute of play. Carreiro scored on an assist from junior
Luis Percovich (Coral Springs, Fla.). Earlier today, Percovich was named the American Midwest Conference men's soccer defensive player of the week. It marked the second time this season Percovich has received the award.
Freshman
Ryan Miller (Waterloo, Ill.) added a goal for the Owls in the 44th minute. Miller scored on an assist from freshman
Kyle Konigsberg (Simi Valley, Calif.).
William Woods pounded the Ottawa defense with shot after shot. The Owls tallied 20 shots on the evening, six of which were on goal. Freshman
Joao Paulo Dutra Parra (Sao Paulo, Brazil) led the team with seven shots, two on goal.
The WWU defense was stingy in the shutout victory. They allowed only five Ottawa shots. The defensive play of the night came from senior
Greg Baker (St. Peters, Mo.). The Braves had a wide open look at the goal from five yards out with 20 minutes remaining in the match. Baker hustled back on defense and made a goal-saving tackle on Michael Mesle to keep the shutout in place.
Freshman
Sean Geoghegan (Naas Co. Kildare, Ireland) recorded one save for WWU.
William Woods (6-0-1) will return to action on September 25. They open American Midwest Conference play against Missouri Baptist University on Firley Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 pm.
