The 23rd-ranked William Woods University women's basketball team opened its 2011-12 season with an overtime victory Monday night in Anderson Arena. The Owls defeated Central Methodist University 55-51.
William Woods took a 29-27 lead into halftime. The Owls shot 34.3% from the field in the opening half. The Eagles shot 34.6% from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play.
CMU outscored the Owls 22-20 in the second half to force an overtime period. WWU held the Eagles to two points in overtime to collect its first victory of the season.
Sharron Andrews (Oakland/Hayward, Calif.) led the Owls with 20 points. Andrews was 8-for-16 from the field. She also recorded five assists on the night.
Olivia Storjohann (Eldridge, Iowa) also reached double-digits in the win. Storjohann scored 13 points and was 5-for-14 from the field.
William Woods outrebounded Central Methodist (0-1) 52-45.
The Owls return to action November 4. They travel to Benedictine College for a 7 pm tip-off.
