Point Lookout, Mo. -- The William Woods University women's basketball team stretched its winning streak to four games behind a balanced offensive attack on Tuesday night, as the Owls cruised to a 73-60 win over College of the Ozarks.
Sharron Andrews (Oakland/Hayward, Calif.) paced the WWU offense with 17 points on the night.
After giving up the first bucket, WWU jumped out to an 8-2 lead as the host Bobcats struggled to find the range. The Owls were able to capitalize on continued lackluster shooting from College of the Ozarks throughout the first half, taking a 30-24 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Blake French (St. Charles, Mo.) forced a turnover right out of the gate to start the second half, but it would take a persistent effort on the offensive glass for the Owls to finally extend to a double-digit lead. After a turnover from Wren Wiebe, Andrews came up empty on two straight attempts for WWU, only to have Ashley Taylor (Dexter, Mo.) find the putback with 18:10 on the clock to put the Owls up 34-24.
The Bobcats answered back with a pair of treys, but WWU was able to immediately push back with a 9-2 run and comfortably hold off College of the Ozarks down the stretch.
In addition to Andrews's 17 points, Taylor added 14 and French and
Katie Scherder (Bowling Green, Mo.) each chipped in 11. Four players finished the game with seven rebounds for the Owls, who dominated the rebounding battle 50-30.
Morgan Smith led all scorers with 22 points, adding 10 rebounds in the losing effort for College of the Ozarks. The Bobcats held the edge in turnovers (12-17) and assists (11-6), but were only able to muster a .343 shooting pace (.263 from 3-pt range) on the night, compared to a .429 clip (.500 from distance) for the Owls.
William Woods moves to 6-2 on the season, and will return to action on Saturday afternoon as part of the Arris' Pizza and Pub college Basketball Classic. The Owls will take on Lindenwood University-Belleville in the second of three games on the slate, with tipoff scheduled for 4 p.m.
