The William Woods University men's soccer team won its season opener Tuesday night on Firley Field. The Owls toppled visiting Avila University 5-1.
The Owls opened the scoring in the 17th minute on a goal from J.P. Parra (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Parra scored off an assist from
Marcelo Carreiro (Curtiba, Brazil). Carreiro added to the scoring column in the 20th minute. He was taken down in the box and connected on a penalty kick to push the lead to 2-0.
Avila cut the lead in half in the 53rd minute. Kyle Dlugolecki scored off an assist from Justin Scicluna. The Owls then scored three unanswered goals in the next 15 minutes from
Luca Stroeter (Sao Paulo, Brazil),
Kyle Konigsberg (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Parra. Parra added an assist in the victory.
The Owls outshot the Eagles 23-5. WWU (1-0) put eight shots on goal. AU (0-1) tallied two shots on goal.

Sean Geoghegan (Naas Co. Kildare, Ireland) had one save in the win. AU goalkeeper Keaton McCoy recorded three saves.
The Owls return to action on September 2 and 3. The Owls host American Midwest Conference newcomer Benedictine University-Springfield at 5 pm on Friday night. They host Concordia University at 11 am on Saturday.
