BATESVILLE, Ark. -- The William Woods University volleyball team opened its five-match road swing in style on Saturday afternoon, picking up a pair of 3-0 sweeps over Lyon College. A
Sarah Wehmeyer (Carrollton, Texas) double-double (33 assists, 12 digs) led the Owls to a 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 sweep in the first match.
Emily Becker (Belleville, Ill) powered WWU to the 25-21, 25-9, 25-21 win in the second match with a double-double (10 kills, 11 digs) of her own.
The Owls defensive strength led the way in the first match, as WWU collected 63 digs to just 55 for Lyon. Becker was also one of three William Woods players with a solo block in the first match, en route to a team total of 8.0 (3 solo, 10 assists).
Offensively, the WWU attack was also potent in the first match, hitting at a .265 clip, led by Becker's 12 kills.
Kristen Bauer (St. Charles, Mo.) added 10 kills in the match.
WWU made quicker work of Lyon in the second match, holding the Scots to just nine points in the second set. It was the first time on the 2012 season that the Owls kept its opponents to fewer than 10 points in a set.
With the wins, the Owls move to 6-12 on the season and climb above the .500 mark in league play with a 3-2 record. Lyon falls to 2-14 (0-8 AMC) on the year.
The Owls continue their five-match road swing on Monday, taking on Harris-Stowe State University in a pair of AMC matches. First serve for the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m., with the second match slated for a 7 p.m. start.
