HANNIBAL, Mo. -- The William Woods University volleyball team kept its perfect American Midwest Conference record intact as they defeated Hannibal-LaGrange University 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-19) on Tuesday night.
William Woods (12-14, 6-0 AMC) extended its recent winning streak to four, as they relied on a strong defensive effort to back its balanced offensive attack to assure the straight set victory.
A stingy Owls defense, who came into the match with the fifth-most digs in the NAIA, collected 50 digs on the night, limiting Hannibal-LaGrange (7-16, 2-3 AMC) to just 28 kills and a .106 attack percentage.
Individually, the WWU defense was sparked by a 24-dig performance from junior libero Abbie O'Mara. The St. Peters, Mo., native, who came into Tuesday's match second in the NAIA in total digs with 618, has now posted 20 or more digs in 17 matches this season.
William Woods got a balanced performance from their players up top, as Emily Becker (9), Lauren Rodewald (8), Stephanie Davis (7), and Kristen Bauer (5) collected 29 of the team's 37 total kills. Becker was extremely efficient, posting a match-high .421 attack percentage.
WWU will be back in action on Friday afternoon as they partake in the Grand View University Invitational. It will be a challenging tournament for the Owls, as they take on a NAIA Top 25 team and two other squads who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Volleyball Coaches Top 25 poll.
They will kick-off the tournament against host-school and 19th-ranked Grand View University at 2 p.m. on Friday. The Owls will then take on Viterbo University (RV) at 6 p.m. to close out Friday's action. Saturday's schedule will have William Woods facing the University of Jamestown (RV) at 10 a.m., then they wrap-up this weekend's action with a match against Ashford University at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
