Box Score FULTON, Mo.—The William Woods men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to no. 17 Hannibal-LaGrange University on Wednesday night.
The Owls (5-5; 2-1 AMC), outplayed the Trojans throughout the first half on offense and stayed strong on defense against a very quick HLG offense. The team could have been up 2-0 at the half, but shots by
Sebastian Burich at the 9:36 mark and
Alan Matthew in the 43
rd minute, both went off the cross bar keeping the game scoreless at 0-0 heading into the second half.
The Trojans (7-2-1; 4-1 AMC) got on the board in the 57
th minute, as Joao Junqueira scored his fourth goal on the season to make it 1-0 Hannibal-LaGrange.
The Owls offensive pressure throughout the game on the Trojan defense finally paid off in the 69
th minute, as
Joao Paulo Parra sent the ball from midfield down the left side of the field for
Kyle Konigsberg, who used his speed to get past the Trojan defender and blast his shot past goalkeeper Logan Miller on his short side to make it a 1-1 tie.
With momentum on their side, the Owls continued to have scoring chances, as they outshot the Trojans 10-2 in the second half, but neither team could break the tie, so it was off to overtime.
In the first overtime, both teams' continued to battle for possession and the offenses looked to score the game winner. It looked as if the game was headed for a second overtime, until with .39 seconds left, Junqueira scored his second of the game and fifth on the season to shock the Owls defeating them by one goal.
On offense, the Owls were led by Parra totaling five shots, with Burich adding three and
Ryan Miller and
Jacob Hawes each totaling two.
Evan Melone played well in net for the team, making three saves.
The team will be back in action this Saturday on the road as the team travels to St. Louis, Mo., to take on Harris-Stowe State University. Kick-off will start at 3:00 p.m.
