Box Score COLUMBIA, Mo.— The William Woods men's soccer team suffered another tough loss against a top 25 team, as 18
th ranked Columbia College defeated the Owls 2-1 in double overtime.
This game was highly regarded as two of the top teams' in the American Midwest Conference battling it out and neither team disappointed in showing off their skills on the field.
The Owls (6-6; 3-2 AMC), jumped on the scoreboard first, as
Marcelo Carreiro scored his seventh goal on the season on assist from
Alex Severino to give the team an early 1-0 lead just 18:00 minutes into the game.
At the 26:16 mark, Zac Walters had his shot blocked by
Alan Matthew, but Antonio Ayres kicked the rebounded shot in the net past Owls goalie
Evan Melone, tying the score up at 1-1 for Columbia. The defenses and goaltenders for both teams' shut down the offenses for the rest of the half, as Columbia totaled seven shots, while the Owls were held to a season low two shots in the first 45:00 minutes.
In the second half, the Owls offense picked up the pressure on the Cougar defense and totaled 13 shots, with
Jordan Bay leading the way with four. Even though the teams' defense held the CC offense to five shots and had multiple scoring chances of their own on offense, the game remained tied 1-1 after 90:00 minutes of play.
For the second time in six days and against its second top 25 opponent, WWU was headed for another overtime. In the first 10:00 minute OT, the Owls had four shots total, one from
Sebastian Burich and Bay, while two shots came from Carreiro, however, neither team could break the tie so it was off to double overtime.
In the final OT, just .12 seconds in, Rafael Ramos scored the game winner from 35 yards out and gave the Cougars the one goal win.
Bay and Carreiro each totaled five shots on the evening, with Burich adding three. Melone played well in net for the Owls, making five saves.
The team will be back in action on Saturday October 12
th as the team plays host to Williams Baptist College. Kick-off will start at 1:00 p.m.
