Owls Drop First Game Of Hampton Inn Classic Against Bellevue University

Nutt led the Owls on offense with 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting.
Box Score BELLEVUE, Neb.—The William Woods men's basketball team dropped its first game of the Hampton Inn Classic against Division II No. 19. ranked Bellevue University, falling 106-72.

The Owls (1-4), started cold from the field, as they were unable to make their first basket until the 13:10 mark on a shot made by Patrick Lewis, to cut the teams' deficit down to 13-4.

One minute later, Jonathon Nutt was able to make his layup attempt, putting the score at 19-11 with 12:08 remaining in the half, but that would be the final time the Owls were able to keep the deficit in single digits, as Bellevue closed out the half on a 39-17 run to hold a 58-28 lead at the half.

The Owls shot 40 percent (11-for-27) in the first 20:00 minutes, however, Bellevue was on fire shooting 58 percent (18-for-31) from the field, including an astounding 64 percent (11-for-17) from the three point arc.

The Bruins offense continued to stay hot from the field no matter what defense the Owls threw at them, shooting again above 50 percent from the field (53 percent) and they were able to go on for the 34 point victory.

WWU improved its shooting in the second half, netting 45 percent (16-for-35) of its shots, but the Bruins were unstoppable from the field all evening, making 55 percent of its shots.

Senior Jonathon Nutt led the Owls on offense with 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting. Damon Burrow had an impressive game off the bench for the team, scoring a career high 11 points on 3-for-6 shooting, while Blake Burgess was the final Owl to reach double-figures in points with 10.

The Bruins (5-2) were led by Isaiah Strong, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the field for 17 points and dished out four assists. Michael Dotson was also perfect from the floor, knocking in all five of his shots for 16 points, while Lee Ames and Russell Droll added 14 and 10 points respectively.

The Owls jump right back into action tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at the Hampton Inn Classic against another ranked Division II opponent in No. 24 ranked York College. The Panthers (4-0) are off to an undefeated start to the season, putting up 94 points per game, led by Andre Vaughn averaging 18 points on 42 percent shooting.

Dylan Brewer is second on the team in scoring, averaging 17 points and is first on the team in assists with 14. Heyvis Jackson is netting 14 points a contest, while Remi Mignott will be another player to look out for, putting up 13 points per game.
