Owls Fall Short In Season Opener Against Avila

Parra led the Owls on offense with eight shots, three landing on goal.
Box Score FULTON, Mo.- The William Woods men's soccer team out-shot Avila University 24-7 in tonight's game, however, couldn't find the back of the net as the Owls fell in their season opener 1-0.

The Eagles got on the board early scoring at the 6:22 mark off the foot of Louis Gallagher, to make it 1-0 Avila. From then on, the Owls offense dominated the first half with 10 scoring chances, four of which landed on goal. Joao Paulo Parra was very busy in the first 45:00 minutes, totaling five shots. After allowing the early goal, the defense did not allow Avila to get a shot on goal the rest of the half.

The second half continued to be the same story, with the Owls controlling the pace of the game on offense and stepping up on defense. Sebastian Burich nearly tied the game at 1-1 in the 67th minute, as his distance shot got past the goalkeeper, but hit the post and went wide.

As the game continued to go on, the Owls offense continued their pressure on the Eagles defense and their goalie Jesus Revilla who made six saves for Avila. The Eagles, however, held their own blocking multiple shots and kicking away near goals that crossed the goal line by the WWU offense, keeping the 1-0 lead intact and going on for the shutout win.

The Owls totaled 14 more shots in the second half, while holding Avila to just four shots, including just one shot in the final 20:00 minutes of the game.

Parra led the way with eight shots on the evening, three landing on goal. Brett Hodges was second on the team in shots with four. Robertt Butvin played well in his season debut in goal, making five saves on the night. Gallagher led the Eagles with the lone goal on the evening and all three of his shots landing on net.

The Owls will look to getting their first win on the season next on the road at McKendree University on September 5th. Kick-off is slated to start at 7:00 p.m.
