BELLEVUE, Neb. -- The William Woods University volleyball team concluded its first day at the Bellevue University Labor Day Classic with a 3-0 (24-26, 22-25, 15-25) to Baker University.
William Woods (0-3) struggled from the attack, as they registered a .113 hitting percentage. Emily Becker landed a team-high eight kills, it is the third straight game this season that she has led WWU in kills.
The first set was a tightly contested one, as neither team could build a lead of more than three points. Leading 24-22, a ball handing error by the Owls extended the set for Baker University (3-3). The Wildcats would finish the on a 3-2 run to give them the 26-24 come-from-behind victory in set one.
The two squads traded points in the second set until a 4-1 run by William Woods gave them a 21-18 lead. BU closed out the set with a 7-1 run to score yet another come-from-behind win, this time taking set two 25-22.
The Wildcats started the third and final set on a 9-1 run, and that would be more than enough to spark Baker to victory as they took the set 25-15, taking the match in straight sets.
Kristen Bauer collected seven kills in the night cap, and tallied six digs.
The Owls posted 46 digs on the night, as Abbie O'Mara led the team for the third straight game with 14 digs.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Owls as they will be playing at 11 a.m. tomorrow morning. The Owls will face off against Ottawa University, who made the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament last year.
William Woods will wrap up the Labor Day Classic with a match against John Brown University tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
