Volleyball Falls In Straight Sets Against No. 7-Ranked Missouri Baptist On Wednesday Night

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The William Woods University volleyball team fell in straight sets against No. 7-ranked Missouri Baptist University on Wednesday night, as the Owls were defeated 3-0 (11-25, 11-25, 15-25).

In the first set, it was the Spartans (28-1; 8-0 AMC), jumping out to an 11-4 lead, after an attack error from William Woods (18-13; 5-3 AMC). MBU extended its advantage out to 20-11, after a kill from Taylor Cook and they went on to take the first set 25-11.

The Owls totaled six kills and six errors in the first set, for an attack percentage of .000, while MBU earned 14 kills and four errors, for an attack percentage of .385.

In the second set, it was the Spartans again jumping out to a quick lead, as a kill from Kristina Medanovic, put MBU up 12-6. The Owls were able to narrow the advantage down to five, at 16-11, after a kill from junior Emily Becker, but the No. 7-ranked Spartans closed out the set on a 9-0 run and went on for the 25-11 second set win.

The Owls totaled a team-high eight kills in the second set, while limiting themselves to four errors. The Spartans, however, totaled a match-high 18 kills and had only two errors, which gave them an attack percentage of .593.

In the third set, it was the Owls this time around taking the early lead, as a kill from freshman Abbi McKnelly, gave the team an 8-6 advantage. The two teams' would continue to go point-for-point and meet up at 11-all, after WWU was able to tie it, after a kill from Stephanie Davis.

The Spartans gained some breathing room at 16-11, after going on a 5-0 run, but William Woods would cut the lead down to 16-13, after a kill from Becker and an attack error from Missouri Baptist.

That would be as close as the Owls would get, however, as MBU went on for the 25-15 set and match win.

WWU totaled 21 kills in the match and were led by Becker, totaling a team-high seven kills. McKnelly was second on the Owls with six kills and a team-high attack percentage of .500, while Davis added four.

Freshamn Brittney Engelbrecht added 20 assists and four digs, while senior Abbie O'Mara led WWU with a team-high five digs.

MBU was led by Hannah Carey, earning a match-high 14 kills and an attack percentage of .476, while Cook and Mallory Dillon each added nine kills.

Setter Ally Krus totaled 38 assists, while libero Haley Pouliezos contributed a match-high 22 digs.

The Owls will jump up right back into action tomorrow night, as they pay a visit to Harris-Stowe State University. First-serve is set for 7 p.m.

The Hornets (5-18; 0-7 AMC) will enter Thursday night's game having dropped 11 straight games, with its last win coming against Crowley's Ridge College on September 25th, in five sets (3-2).

On the season, HSSU is led by Sadie Mosby, having a team-high 183 kills and an attack percentage of .149. Jamsine Davis is second on the Hornets with 160 kills, but leads Harris-Stowe with 151 digs.

Trenee Bowman and Valencia McCorckle have combined for 447 of the teams' 479 assists, while Kyesha Lee and McCorckle have contributed 135 and 102 digs respectively.
