Men's Soccer Looks For Its Sixth AMC Win On The Road Against Freed-Hardeman

Hawes is tied for the team lead in goals (six) with teammate Alex Severino.
HENDERSON, Tenn.—The William Woods University men's soccer team looks to finish out American Midwest Conference (AMC) play with a win against Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, Tennessee on Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Owls (10-4-2; 5-3-1 AMC) fell to No.21-ranked Lindenwood-Belleville University 3-1 on Saturday and were limited to only four shot attempts, where the Lynx totaled 21 in the outing.

The two first Lynx shot attempts came within the fifth minute from John Sundberg and Cesar Acosta, but both shots were saved by freshman Conor Cable. William Woods executed with their first chance to score, with Jesse Jordan scoring the Owls only goal of the day off a header, as Jacob Hawes came up with the assist.

The Lynx answered back, with Acosta attempting a shot in the 21st minute, where he saw his shot blocked by Jesse Bowers, but then just two minutes later, the Lynx found the back of the net, as Leonardo Ferri scored off an assist from Enrique Garcia to tie the game up at 1-1.

Five more shot attempts from the feet of Ferri, Garcia, Hugo Maccioni and Juan Santamaria prompted the Owls to work as a unit defensively and keep the score even at 1-1 going into the half.

In the second frame, the Owls continued to push the Lynx, with a shot attempt and miss out of the gate in the 47th minute by Joe Lewis. The Lynx responded in the 48th minute, as Acosta made it 2-1, as he scored his ninth goal on the year, off an assist from Ferri.

In the 88th minute, the Lynx put the game away, as a shot from Acosta was saved by Cable, but Johan Sundberg followed up on the loose ball and scored off the rebound, to make it a final, 3-1.

The story of the game came from Cable's eight saves on the day, giving him a total of 62 on the season. The freshman goaltender has totaled 1276:30 minutes of play and still ranks 12th in the NAIA in goals against per game (.710). As a team, the Owls still rank first in the NAIA in shutouts (nine).

Offensively, the Owls are led by Alex Severino and Hawes, as the duo have each scored six goals on the year. Anthony Moscatello has added five, while Alan Matthew has scored four.

Paulo Conelian, meanwhile, leads the team in assists with eight, while fellow senior, Luca Stroeter, has added six.

After starting out the season 5-0, Freed-Hardeman (8-5; 3-5 AMC) has struggled since AMC play opened up for them on September 18th, as they have been on the losing end of three shutouts this season versus conference opponents. The Lions, however, are coming off of a dominating 5-1 non-conference win against Talladega College on October 25th.

The Lions are led by Stefano Basso, scoring a team-high seven goals and five assists on the season. Jermaine Steele has contributed six goals and four assists, while Tristan Quadrini and Alex Meany have added five goals apiece.

In net, Zach Johnson has totaled 32 saves in 650:58 minutes of play, has a save percentage of .744 and a goals against average of 1.52
