HENDERSON, Tenn.—The William Woods University men's soccer team found its 11
th win on the season, as the Owls defeated Freed-Hardeman University, 2-0 on Thursday evening.
The Owls (11-4-2; 6-3-1 AMC) were given many chances to score early in the first half, having totaled six shot attempts within the first 15 minutes of play.
Brett Hodges broke the scoreless tie, as he scored for William Woods at the 27:17 mark, where he was assisted by
Alex Severino.
William Woods put on a defensive show in the first half, as they outshot Freed-Hardeman (8-6; 3-6 AMC) 8-1 in first 45 minutes of play. The Lions only shot came from an attempt by Stefano Basso, however, he saw his shot saved by
Conor Cable.
The second half was much more of a battle, as Freed-Hardeman outshot the Owls 7-6, however, the defensive efforts including shot blocks from
Julian Wells and Cable's five saves helped keep the lead and maintain the shutout against the Lions.
The Owls second goal of the night came from senior
Sebastian Burich in the 74
th minute, giving him three goals on the season and WWU a 2-0 victory.
William Woods totaled 14 shot attempts on the night, led by Severino with a game-high four, while Hodges was right behind with three and Burich contributed two shots.
Jacob Hawes,
Paulo Conelian and
Harrison Bray all totaled one shot on the night.
Cable, meanwhile, tallied another shutout to his resume and collected five saves, which now gives the freshman net minder 67 on the year.
WWU returns home for its final regular season game of the 2014 season, as they go against No. 8-ranked Missouri Valley College on Sunday, November 2
nd. Game time is set at 1 p.m. Prior to the match against the Vikings, the Owls will honor its seniors.
