Men's Soccer Battles (RV) Columbia College To A 0-0 Draw On Wednesday Night

FULTON, Mo.—The William Woods University men's soccer team played its second consecutive double overtime game on Wednesday night, but despite some close chances to put the game away, the Owls and (RV) Columbia College ended in a 0-0 draw (2OT).

The first half between the two teams' was very defensive minded, as Columbia College (5-3-2; 3-1-1 AMC), totaled five shots, while William Woods (8-1-2; 3-1-1 AMC) were held to three and after 45:00 minutes of play, the game remained scoreless at 0-0.

The pace of the game picked up in the second half, as both teams' looked to score the game winner, but the defense and goaltenders continued to remain strong, despite the closer offensive chances in the final 45:00 minutes of regulation.

Neither team, however, could score the game winner, despite improving off its first half shot total, as the Cougars totaled seven, while WWU earned six, so it was off to overtime.

In the first OT, the Cougars had a great chance to steal a win from WWU, as a foul was called on an Owls player for incidental contact, which gave CC a free kick, just mere feet in front of Owls goaltender Conor Cable.

Matija Ceraj received a pass inside the box, in front of a number of Owls players on the goal line, but his shot went off the cross bar and the game remained tied. WWU totaled one shot in the first OT, off the foot of Jesse Jordan, but it was Cable and the defense keeping the Cougars from finding the back of the net after 10:00 minutes of play.

In the second OT, it was the Owls this time around having the chance to pick up a huge American Midwest Conference (AMC) victory, as a header from Alex Severino went off the cross bar, but the ball found the foot of Jacob Hawes, whose shot went just high over the net.

Sebastian Burich had two more consecutive chances for the Owls, but his first shot was saved by CC goaltender Daniel Ainsworth, while the second went wide of the post.

Cable would go on to make one final save at the 108:22 mark and at the end of 110:00 minutes of play, the game concluded in a 0-0 draw.

The Owls totaled 15 shots in the game, with Hawes contributing a game-high four shots. Burich totaled three, while Severino, Jordan and Paulo Conelian had two apiece.

In net for the Owls, Cable was outstanding yet again, making 10 saves, which is a new career-high for the Spalding, England, native.

Columbia College, meanwhile, had 18 shots in the game, with Zac Walters tying Hawes with four shots. Rasmus Juul Pedersen and Nick Horne tied for second with three, while Vadim Cojocov added two shots.

The tough stretch of play continues for the Owls this weekend, as they pay a visit to first place and No. 25-ranked Lindenwood University-Belleville on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off for this thrilling match-up starts at 3 p.m.
