Men's Basketball Returns To Action Against Southwest Baptist University

Hill, looks to improve off his 11.2 points per game average on Tuesday night
BOLIVER, Mo. – After having time off for the Holidays, the William Woods University men's basketball will return to action on Tuesday night, as the team will pay a visit to NCAA Division-II Southwest Baptist University. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.

In the Owls (4-8; 1-4 AMC) last outing the team dropped its fourth American Midwest Conference game, in a heartbreaker to (RV) Lyon College, 45-42.

Despite valiant effort, both teams had a hard time getting the basketball to go through the net, shooting well underneath their average percent from the field and only recording 11 free-throws in the first frame combined.

The Owls offense was much more efficient in the second half, as the team finished the night shooting a 36 percent from the field but just 25 percent from the three point line and after getting to the charity stripe two times in the first half, WWU only got to the line four times in the finale.

DJ Johnson, led the Owls with 12 points and eight rebounds, where all of his points came in the second half of the game, while three other Owl players ended the night with five points apiece, who included Klayton Kuschel, Jerel Wilhite and Ryan Hill.

On the season, WWU is shooting 44 percent from the field, 31 percent from the three point line and is out rebounding opponents 443-432.

Johnson, the junior transfer, continues to have a break out start in his first season with the Owls, leading the team in several catergories which includes scoring (12.2 ppg), rebounds (6.58 per game) and blocks (11).

Hill, a St. Louis, Missouri native, is second on the team in scoring (11.2 ppg) but is shooting a team-high 54 percent from the floor and a blistering 46 percent from beyond the arc.

Senior, Nate Bitner is averaging 9.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, while Alec Mulvihill, Derrick Hayes and Jarett Boss all have chipped in eight points per game.

The Bearcats are currently 5-7 on the season and are 1-3 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).  In the team's last outing, they fell in a close game to Pittsburg State University 73-72.

SBU is lead by Daymond Cowiah, who is shooting 57 percent from the field and averaging 11.2 points per game. Another, key player for the Bearcats is Menas Stephens, who is second on the team in scoring (10.9 ppg) but is leading the team on the boards with 10.9 rebounds per game.

"It will be a good challenge for us," said head coach Nick Totta. "The game will be decided by who executes better in the half court."
