Box Score BATESVILLE, Ark.—The William Woods University men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss with just seconds remaining against Lyon College on Saturday, as the Scots scored with .02 seconds left to win 2-1 and snap the Owls winning streak at four.
The two teams' totaled 11 shots in the first half, but neither squad was able to find the back of the net, after 45:00 minutes of play.
After outshooting the Scots 11-6 in the second half, the Owls (5-1-1; 0-1-0 AMC) finally broke through in the 70
th minute, as
Luca Stroeter found the back of the net, for the first time this season, giving WWU a 1-0 lead.
In the 77
th minute, however, Lyon's (3-2-1; 1-0-0 AMC) Jonathan Ray scored his second goal on the year, tying the game up 1-1. Then, with what seemed to be like a game headed to overtime, in shocking fashion, at the 89:58 mark of the second half, Jack Hayes broke the 1-1 tie, scoring his third goal on the season and handing WWU its first loss on the season.
The Owls totaled 16 shots in the game and were led by
Alex Severino's four shots, while
Paulo Conelian added three and nine other Owls added one shot. Meanwhile, freshman goaltender
Conor Cable, made four saves on the night.
Lyon, meanwhile, was led by Ray, totaling six shots and one goal, while Benjamin Elton contributed three shots and Rob Brown made four saves in net. Â
The Owls will now look for an upset against (RV) Park University on Wednesday September 17
th. Kick-off is set to start at 7 p.m. at Firley Field.
