FULTON, Mo.—The William Woods University volleyball team moved to 4-0 in American Midwest Conference (AMC) play on Tuesday night, as the Owls swept past AMC newcomer St. Louis College of Pharmacy in three sets (25-15, 25-11, 25-19).
In the first set, the Owls (13-9; 4-0 AMC), jumped out to a 14-7 lead on the Eutectics (4-5; 1-4 AMC), capped off by a kill from freshman
Abbi McKnelly.
The team would push its lead out to 20-8, after a kill by senior
Kristen Bauer, and despite a quick 7-1 rally from STLCOP, the Owls still went on for the 25-15 win.
WWU totaled 17 kills and a match-high attack percentage of .433 in the first set, while St. Louis College of Pharmacy, totaled five kills and five errors, for an attack percentage of .000.
It was more of the same in the second set, as the Owls again took a 16-9 advantage, after a kill by junior
Emily Becker. The Eutectics were only able to score two points the rest of the set, allowing WWU to go on for the 25-11 win and take a two game lead on STLCOP.
The Owls put on another impressive performance in the second set, totaling 12 kills and an attack percentage of .360, while the Eutectics had four kills and nine errors, for an attack percentage of -.161.
It was a back-and-forth battle in the third set, but the Owls were still able to grab a 10-7 lead, after a kill by
Stephanie Davis. WWU, then went on a 10-4 run, to take a 20-11 advantage and from there the Owls were able to go on for the 25-19 set and match win.
Davis, a Manchester, Missouri, native, earned a match-high 10 kills, while having zero errors, for an attack percentage of .714, which was also a match-high. McKnelly contributed nine kills and an attack percentage of .571, while Bauer and
Abby Ferguson each added seven kills. Becker, meanwhile, played well on both sides of the net, having six kills and 12 digs.
Freshman setter
Brittney Engelbrecht totaled 35 assists and six digs, while senior
Abbie O'Mara led the way defensively with 14 digs.
STLCOP totaled 16 kills in the three set match and were led by Alyssa Hitpas, having a team-high seven kills, while Kaitlyn LaBoube added 12 assists and Mallory Mensing led the team with 10 digs.
The Owls will now look to win its third straight game and stay perfect in the AMC, as they welcome Lindenwood-Belleville to Anderson Arena on Thursday night. First-serve is set for 7 p.m.
