Boss and Hill Lead The Owls Past Hornets

FULTON, Mo.- The William Woods University men's basketball team was able to get back to its winning ways with a big American Midwest Conference victory on Tuesday night, as the Owls defeated Harris-Stowe State University 65-56.

The Owls (5-10; 2-5 AMC), jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after Derrick Hayes and Nate Bitner both knocked down two-pointers inside the lane. The Hornets, however, would tie the game up for the second time in the half at the 14:24 mark and go on a 6-2 run, giving them a 19-13 lead.

After trading baskets for the rest of the first frame, WWU would try to get some momentum before going into the locker room, as Jarett Boss was the catalyst knocking down back-to-back baskets, giving WWU a 27-22 lead.

Although, HSSU would drain two free-throws and Tony Flagg would nail a two-pointer right before the buzzer sounded, cutting the Owls lead down to one as the first half ended with a 27-26 score in William Woods advantage.

The Owls shot a 40 percent from the field as Boss and TaiRhe Turner led the way with nine and eight points, respectfully, while the defense held HSSU to 37 percent shooting, although the Hornets were a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc.

In the second half, the Hornets offense came out aggressive and while both teams swapped possessions, causing the score to be tied at four different occasions. HSSU, guard Markos Psimitis would give the Hornets its largest lead of the game, 42-37 with 13:00 minutes left to play.

Then, after a steal, Boss would go down the court and convert into two points play and then knock down a two-pointer in the Owls next possession, putting the Owls back on top, 52-45. Shortly after, Turner would have a huge rebound and put back to give the Owls the energy the team needed to put the Owls up 54-45, as the team cruised to secure a nine point, 65-56 AMC victory.

The Owls shot 42 percent in the game, led by Boss having another strong outing off the bench, totaling a career-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooing in 24 minutes of play, while Ryan Hill contributed 13 points and Turner recorded a career-high 10 points.

Having only six players suited up and not having much depth on the bench, HSSU shot 39 percent and their comeback fell short, despite Flagg netting a game-high 27 points in nearly playing the full 40:00 minutes of the match-up.

With the victory, the Owls now move up to a tie with Missouri Baptist University for seventh place in the AMC.

Up next for the team is another home AMC match-up, as St, Louis College of Pharmacy, who is still looking for its first AMC win on the season, pays a visit to Anderson Arena, for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
