Story written by Sports Information student worker Cole SchaeferFULTON, Mo. – For the second straight game, the William Woods University men's soccer team couldn't find the back of the net for the game winning goal, as the Owls drew a 1-1 tie in (2OT) Tuesday night, against Hannibal-LaGrange University.
Knowing how vital this game was to their American Midwest Conference (AMC) standing, the Owls() put the pressure on the Trojans right from the beginning whistle and didn't waste any time, within the first five minutes of the game
Anthony Moscatello connected with
Harrison Bray. The Bromley, London, England native buried his second goal of the year, giving the Owls an early 1-0 lead.
However, with hardly any time running off the clock the Trojans marched down the field and struck back with a goal of their own to even up the score (1-1) at the 8:46 mark.
Then later in the first half HLGU would attempt to take the lead, as Nathan Sapp delivered a shot that was heading to the right corner of the net, but
Conor Cable recorded a vast save, to keep the score the same.
As the first frame came to an end neither team could capitalize when they were in striking distance and the teams' went into half time with a 1-1 tie.
Hannibal-LaGrange outshot the Owls in the first 45:00 minutes of play 10-7, while Cable collected four saves.
The second half had a complete different start than the first frame did, as it was a very defensively sound battle between both teams with neither team was backing down.
Despite the valiant effort from WWU, the Trojans held the Owls shot less for 38:00 minutes in the second frame but even though HLGU possessed the ball for most of the half, it did not matter.
Neither team could make the most of their scoring opportunities and at the end of regulation, with the score remaining the same, it was off to over time, which the Owls were no strangers too.
In the first over time, it was no different than it had been all night, as each team proved they were not going down without a fight. There were just one shot recorded from each side and in hopes for a game winning goal, the Owls needed another extra 10:00 minutes of play.
In the second overtime,
Harrison Bray tried to put away the game for WWU but his shot was saved by the Trojan's goal keeper and after 110:00 minutes of play the match-up ended in a 1-1 tie.
William Woods was led by Bray who recorded the Owls lone goal and collected a team-high four shots on the night, while Cable tied his season-high eight saves on the night.
The Owls will return to action on Saturday October 17
th, as the team hosts Williams Baptist College for a 1:00 p.m. start time.
