Story written by Sports Information student worker Alex St. Pierre FULTON, Mo.— The William Woods University women's soccer team scored two quick consecutive goals in the first half and added another in the second, which put the game out of reach, as the Owls defeated Hannibal-LaGrange University, 3-0.
Coming into the game, the Owls were 3-3-1 in AMC play and were looking to advance in the conference standings. The Owls offense picked up in the previous two games and it continued against the Lady Trojans with a dominating shutout win.
Right from the kick-off the Owls (6-6-2; 4-3-1 AMC), controlled every aspect of the game, as both sides had their opportunities in the first half, but it was William Woods that capitalized by scoring two goals in the 20
th minute.Â
The first goal came off the foot of senior
Halle Schroeder, off an impressive pass from
Elyssa Cappaert. Schroeder finessed a perfect shot into the upper corner of the goal to put the Owls on top 1-0. Then, only sixteen seconds later, the Owls' offense struck again, with
Mackenzie Cork assisting a cross from
Kaitlyn Wideman to
Jordan McNamara to put the Owls up 2-0.Â
In goal for William Woods was two-time AMC Player of the Week
Ashley Parisi, whom put up a first half shut-out against the Lady Trojans (3-8-1; 3-5 AMC) with five saves.Â
During the second half the Owls' defense continued to shut down the Lady Trojans' offense. They only allowed three shots during second half and none were on-goal. Freshman Rebecca Strugess contributed to the shutout in goal for the Owls during the second half.Â
William Woods outshot Hannibal-LaGrange 18-9, with 11 of the Owls' shots being on goal. The Owls scored their final goal in the 73
rd minute, when Cappaert sent a perfect through ball to McNamara that left her one-on-one with the Trojans' keeper and McNamara was able to put in the final goal, her seventh on the year, to seal up an exciting victory for the Owls.Â
Cappaert lead the team with two assists, while Wideman and Cork added one also. McNamara put up another impressive performance by adding two goals, while Schroeder added one goal giving her three on the season.Â
The Owls will return to action on Saturday, October 17
th, as they host Williams Baptist College on Senior Day. Kick-off will start at 11 a.m., with Senior Day to follow.
