- The William Woods University volleyball team swept Harris Stowe-State University in three straight sets (25-9, 25-7, 25-12) on Wednesday night.
The Owls (15-9; 5-0 AMC), continue to impress in the American Midwest Conference. The team collected a total of 36 kills and ended the night with a season-high attack percentage of .431 as a team.
In the first set, the Lady Owls were up 3-2, as the team went on a 4-0 run, after a
Stephanie Davis kill and three consecutive attack errors by the Hornets, bringing the score to 7-2. The owls would then continue its offensive momentum, with an impressive 17-4 run to capture a 25-9 win for the first set.
The second set began with a 5-0 run for the Owls, which quickly turned into a 14-3 lead, from the help of
Lauren Rodewald kill. WWU went on a 16-4 run to take the second set (25-7) advancing to a 2-0 match advantage over the Hornets.
In the third set, the WWU owls jumped to a 12-5 lead after a 6-0 run. After two straight kills from
Emily Becker, making the score 15-8, the last 4 earned points sealed the 25-12 set and match victory.
Junior,
Stephanie Davis led the way with nine kills, while only committing one error of the team's eight errors for the night.
Cierra Merz added six kills, while
Lauren Rodewald chipped in with five kills.
Brittney Engelbrecht handed out 24 assists and defensively helped the team with six digs.
Melanie Kala led the team defensively, with eight digs, while
Kendra Vernatti added four.
William Woods will get back to work on Friday at home, against Freed-Hardeman with a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
