Women's Basketball Looks To Get Above The .500 Mark In AMC On Thursday Against Hannibal-LaGrange

Lateju, leads the team with her 12.8 points per game on the season
FULTON, Mo, - The William Woods University women's basketball team returns to American Midwest Conference (AMC) play on Thursday, as the team hosts Hannibal-LaGrange University for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
 
After a three game road trip and a week off for Thanksgiving break, the Owls (7-2; 2-2 AMC), get back on its home court after not playing inside Anderson Arena for close to a month. 
 
In WWU last outing earlier this week, the team defeated Missouri Valley College in dominating fashion 74-53, as the Owls shot a 41.9 percent from the floor and was 6-of-11 (38.5 percent) from downtown.
 
It was a very evenly distributed game for the Owls, as every player that checked in the game contributed one way or another.
 
Kelsey Scherder paced the way with 11 points, as she shot 50.0 percent from both the field (4-for-8) and three point line (2-of-4). Kendra Vernatti was the other Owl to end the night in double digits, as the senior recorded 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting, while freshman Kailey Morris had a break out night, posting a season-high nine points in just four minutes of play.
 
Then five Owls ended the night with eight points , which included Nia Lateju, Kennedy Volkart, April Gebke, Marissa Webb and Bailey Rollins. Volkart also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, which all came on the defensive side.
 
On the season, Lateju leads the team in points per game, as she is averaging 12.8 and shooting a team-high 50.0 percent (44-of-88) from the floor. She is also second on the team in the rebound category with 65 on the year and grabbing 7.2 a game. Volkart and Scherder are two other players that also have displayed a strong showing on the season, averaging 9.6 and 9.1 points per game, respectively, while Volkart is leading the team with 74 rebounds on the year, pulling down 8.2 per game. Vernatti, has been a key impact offensively off the bench, as the senior has pushed her season average up to 8.4 per game, while leading the team from behind the arc, shooting 38.5 percent (10-of-26).
 
Hannibal-LaGrange comes into Thursday's match-up 3-7 on the season, with a 2-3 AMC record, as the Trojans are coming of a 86-66 deficit to Columbia College last weekend.
 
On the season, the Trojans are averaging 65.8 points per game as a team, while HLGU has four players that are averaging double-digits. Morgan Winkler leads the team shooting 47.9 percent from the field and averaging 16.6 points per game, while Kenny Greenway is averaging 13.0 points per game, shooting an impressive team-high 42.5 percent (31-of- 73) from the three point line.
 
Emma Penn and Sarah Cline are the other two that round out the four Trojans averaging in double-digits, as Penn is putting up 11.5 points per game and leading the team on the boards, with 7.9 rebounds per game, while Cline has posted 10.9 points per game.
