Women's Basketball Looks To Cap Off The 2015 Year On A High Note

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team will get back into the swing of its season on Thursday after the holiday break, with an American Midwest Conference (AMC) match-up against St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Tip-off is set for 12:00 p.m.
 
The Owls (8-3;3-2 AMC), are coming off a tough 62-58 loss to non-conference foe and the No. 5th ranked College of the Ozarks in its last outing, back on December 19th. WWU was riding a three game winning streak, before the Lady Bobcats snapped it before the Holiday break.
 
William Woods, shot 36.2 percent from the floor and were led by Julia Wells and Nia Lateju, who each netted 13 points and combined for 15 boards. Kennedy Volkart totaled 10 points and seven rebounds, while April Gebke totaled eight points and a team-high five assists. Kendra Vernatti and Kelsey Scherder, meanwhile, contributed seven points each.
 
As a team, the Owls are ranked in the top 10 in the Nation in several categories, which includes defensive rebounds (first), total rebounds (fifth), free throw percentage (tenth) and three point percentage defense (tenth).
 
On the season, Lateju continues to lead the team with her 12.7 points per game average and her 47.8 percent shooting from the field, while she is second on the team in rebounds with 82 on the season (7.5 per game). Volkart, has made a surge of late offensively, pushing her season average up to 9.8 per game, as she leads the team on the boards with 7.9 per game. Scherder and Vernatti have also been offensive threats for the Owls, as both have seen success on the season from beyond the arc. Vernatti leads the team with 12 three pointers on the season and owning an average of 8.3 points per game, while Scherder is right behind her, posting 10 three pointers on the season.
 
St. Louis College of Pharmacy enters Thursday's game with a 1-6 overall record and still hunting for its first AMC victory of the season. In the Eutectics last outing, the team fell to Lyon College 104-37.
 
Emi Santhuff paces the way for STLCOP in nearly every category, as she is averaging 16.0 points per game, on 40.2 percent shooting from the field and has nabbed a team-high 29 rebounds on the season. Another player the Owls will have to keep and eye on is Morgan Rose, who is averaging 10.0 points per game on 31.6 percent shooting from the floor.
