ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The No. 25-ranked William Woods University baseball team dropped its regular season finale on Saturday afternoon, as the Owls fell 10-0 (7 innings), to (RV) Missouri Baptist University, behind the perfect game performance from MBU starter, David Mullins.
Mullins, was dominant all afternoon, as he struck out seven Owls (35-10; 19-7 AMC) in the victory. Offensively, the Spartans (35-10; 17-9 AMC), got the scoring started in the bottom of the first, as Jeff Smith doubled and Brent Zimmerman singled, putting runners on the corners for the heart of the order. Orlando Olivera hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Smith, to make it a 1-0 game.
The Spartans went on to score five more runs in the second and four in the fourth, to win the game, 10-0. MBU totaled 13 hits in the game and were led by Zimmerman, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Olivera, Eli Roundtree and Aaron Pangilinan each added two hits and combined for seven RBI.
For the Owls,
Kyle Marburger took the tough loss, as he went 1.2 innings, allowing five runs on five hits, while striking out one.
Caleb Bounds,
Ryan Schmidt,
Dyllon Harper and
Dustin Kremer all made appearances in relief, with Kremer having a clean inning in the bottom of the sixth, as he allowed no hits and struck out two.
The Owls still closed out the regular season, winners in 10 out of its out 11 games, which has placed the team as the No. 2 seed currently in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) standings, as they are only 0.5 games behind Freed-Hardeman.
The team will now be back in action on April 30
th, as they get set to defend its title at the AMC Tournament, which will take place at Benedictine University at Springfield. Who and when the Owls will play is TBA.
