Men's Soccer Drops To Columbia College 2-0 On Thursday Night

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The William Woods University men's soccer team fell to American Midwest Conference (AMC) rival Columbia College 2-0, on Thursday night. 


The Owls (2-3-1; 0-1-1 AMC), came into the match-up with the Cougars (5-2; 2-0 AMC) in hopes to steal a key road victory. Despite, going head to head with Columbia College in the shot department, as both teams totaled 21in the game. However, two of those shots for the Cougars found the back of the net. 


In the first five minutes of the game, CC almost drew blood first with back-to-back shot opportunities from Luiz Guilherme, but Conor Cable came up with two huge saves to keep the game scoreless. 


At the 26:37 mark, the Owls had two scoring chances, one coming from the foot of WWU leading scorer Alex Severino but was blocked by defender, Akhill Noel and then with the rebound Conor Foxall tried to put his shot in the far left corner but went wide. 


Then at the 31:31 minute, a miss communication from the Owls defense left Luiz Guilherme with the ball right in front of the box, as the midfielder's shot went past a diving Cable, to give the Cougars the 1-0 lead. 


The Owls weren't going down without a fight, as the clock was winding down in the first half, Rodrigo Alves and Harrison Bray had two shots on goal to try to tie the game up before going into the locker room but Iain Mcturk came up with both saves, giving the Cougars to 1-0 lead at half. 


Coming out of half time, the Owls looked to put the pressure of the Cougars, although it was Columbia College who struck again, this time Guilherme connected a cross pass to Edin Campara, who found the back of the net, extending the Cougars lead 2-0. 


For the rest of the second half, the Owls offense took control, and the defense, like it has all season, stayed strong to keep the deficit at 2-0. Despite out shooting Columbia College 14-9 in the second frame, the Owls couldn't find the back of the net and CC went on to capture the 2-0 win. 


William Woods offensively, were led by Jordan with five shots, meanwhile Bray added four shots and Hodges collected three shots. Cable recorded four saves on the night. 


The Owls turn right back around and take a break from AMC play, as the team takes on Bethany College this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
