Owls Defense Guides The Team In Sweep Over Culver-Stockton College

CANTON, Mo. - The William Woods University volleyball team picked up its third consecutive win on Thursday night, as the Owls swept Culver-Stockton College in three sets (25-20, 25-23, 25-18). 


In the first set, the Owls (9-6; 1-0 AMC), totaled eight kills as a team but also committed eight errors. They took the first set by holding the Wildcats to just seven kills and an attack percentage of -.075. 


The second set, WWU offense was more assertive, totaling 11 kills and an attack percentage of .143, while Culver-Stockton College recorded 10 kills. The win in the second set gave the Owls the 2-0 advantage in the match. 


In the third match, statistically, was the match-best for the Owls, as the team tallied a match-high 14 kills with only committing two errors. An attack percentage of .300 helped give WWU the momentum to grab the third set and match win. 


William Woods amassed 33 kills on the night, as the offensive was strong on the night for the Owls, defensively was even more successful. The team recorded a season-high 61 digs, as three players posted double-figures in the dig category. 


Emily Becker led the way with yet another impressive double-double performance, with 11 kills and 21 digs. Stephanie Davis chipped in six kills, while Brittney Engelbrecht also collected a double-double, by handing out a game-high 25 assists and grabbing 10 digs on the night. Shelby Hinshaw paced the way defensively with 18 digs, while Melanie Kala chipped in five. 


The Owls take the weekend off, as the team will return back to the court on September 25th, as the team travels to Olathe, Kansas for the Mid-America Nazarene tournament.
