Women's Soccer Battles To A 1-1 Draw Against Missouri Baptist

ST. LOUIS, Mo.— In yet another battle on the pitch, the William Woods University and Missouri Baptist University women's soccer teams' needed extra time in hopes of finding a winner, but neither squad could score the game winning goal, so it ended in a 1-1 (2OT) tie.

In the first half, the Spartans (2-5-1; 2-0-1 AMC), struck right away, as Donnna Jolliff scored her first goal on the year at the 1:28 mark, to make it a 1-0 game.

The Owls (3-5-2; 1-2-1 AMC), had its chances throughout the first half to score the equalizer, but MBU goaltender, Alexandra Lair, came up with save after save. None bigger came in the 13th minute, as she stopped both Elyssa Cappaert and Halle Schroeder's shot attempts, to keep WWU scoreless.

With Lair making seven saves in the first half, Owls goalie Ashley Parisi, was just as good yet again, making six saves after allowing the early goal. With that said, both offenses' piled on the shots, combining for 19 in the half, but as the half horn sounded, MBU headed into the break ahead 1-0.

In the second half, at the 49:31 mark, Mackenzie Cork received the ball from 30 yards out and kicked it up inside the 18 yard box for Schroeder. Lair attempted to make a sliding save, but Schroeder was able to tip the ball went in between her legs and into the back of the net, which tied the game up at 1-1.

From there, both offenses continued its pressure, as the Spartans totaled nine shots, while the Owls added five more after Schroeder's goal, but both Lair and Parisi were on another level of play, as they combined for nine saves in the final 45:00 minutes of action.

Despite the efforts of both teams', neither one could score the game winner, so for the third time in as many meetings, it was off to overtime.

In the first overtime, the Owls had a scoring chance in the 97th minute, but Schroeder's shot was saved by Lair yet again. MBU added another shot with .01 second left from Jolliff, but her attempt went wide, so another 10:00 minutes of play was needed.

In double overtime, in the 102nd minute, senior Jordan McNamara saw her shot attempt go wide. The team had two more chances in the 106th and 107th minutes, from Shelby Wiebe and McNamara, but neither could score the winner and at the end of 110:00 minutes of action, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

WWU totaled 20 shots in the game and were led by McNamara and Cappaert each having four each. Rochelle Garcia added three, while Schroeder and Cork contributed two each. In goal, Parisi, made six saves, while freshman Rebecca Sturgess, played in a career-high 65:00 minutes and made six saves.

MBU, meanwhile, totaled 21 shots and were led by Jolliff, having seven shots and one goal. Danielle Wilde added five shots, while Megan Allen totaled two. Lair, also was able to make 12 saves in the game.

The Owls will now return home to Firley Field and host Lyon College in an AMC showdown on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off will start at 1 p.m.
