CONWAY, Ark. – The William Woods University men's basketball team captured a new school record on Saturday, collecting its 10
th American Midwest Conference (AMC) win on the season, while also tying the school record of 14 wins on the year, with a down to the wire 79-75 victory over Central Baptist College.
The Owls (14-7; 10-3 AMC), continue to have a break out season, as the team edged CBC to nab the season series over the AMC newcomers, which now puts WWU in the third seed of the AMC .
It was a rocky start for WWU, as the Mustangs broke out to an early 6-5 lead but that didn't defeat the Owls, as
Bryan DeGeare nailed a three pointer at the 15:11 mark, to give the Owls its first lead of the day at 8-6.
After, a two point basket from CBC Justin Harris, tied the game at 8-8, WWU went on a 7-0 run, capped off by a two point basket inside the paint from
DJ Johnson, giving them the 15-8 lead. Then later in the first half, the Owls gained some breathing room and extended its lead out to 11 points, after
Kevin House got an offensive rebound and put back for two points, making the score 34-23 with just under 5:00 minutes left till half.
The Mustangs, kept crawling back and got within six of the Owls, after a Fred Albright three pointer, making the score 36-30 still in WWU favor. The Owls didn't let up and kept its poise, to give them the 43-34 lead heading into half time.
At the break, both teams were shooting over 40.0 percent from the field, as WWU went 16-of-33 from the field and were an impressive 5-of-14 from downtown, while CBC shot 41.8 percent from the field but connected on just 2-of-8 from the three point line.
Coming out of the half, the Owls put together a 8-2 run, where senior
Kevin House ignited a boast of energy with his hustle, grabbing down another offensive rebound and put back, extending WWU lead out to its largest of the night at 15, making the score 56-41 at the 14:27 mark.
However, in the last 10:00 minutes of play, CBC showed its diligence and started to cut into the Owls lead one possession at a time. In a time where it seemed there was a lid on the basket for WWU, the Mustangs weren't going down without a fight.
At the 6:12 mark, CBC Mike Evans found a cutting Everett Reed and dished a no look pass for a two point bucket, tying the game up at 62-62 and then after a WWU turnover, the Mustangs came down the court and converted it into two points to regain the 64-62 lead.
The Owls had several opportunities to pick up easy points down the stretch but found themselves in a root from the free throw line, However, the team's defense picked up its intensity forcing the Mustangs to commit back-to-back turnovers and after a
Austin Lowery's wide open layup of a turnover, the Owls retook the lead at 67-64, which led to a CBC timeout.
Then with less than a minute left in regulation, House was fouled behind the three point line and went to the line to drain all three, pushing the Owls back up by four (75-71). Although, it wasn't over yet in Conway, Arkansas, as CBC Jaylin McBride hit a three pointer to get within one of the Owls (75-74) but WWU kept its composure and sank key free throws down the stretch and went on to defeat CBC, 79-75.
William Woods finished the day shooting 43.3 percent from the floor, while four players posted double figures, however, the Owls only shot 61.3 percent (19-of-31) from the free throw line, while CBC ended the day on 39.1 percent shooting from the field.
House, who was coming off a season-high 25 points in the Owls last outing, had yet another stellar day, as the senior led all scorers with 22 points, on 7-of-13 from the floor, while also adding a team-high eight rebounds and four assists to his stat sheet on the day. DeGeare and Johnson, also had strong displays, as both chipped in 12 points apiece, while Lowery added 10 points.
