COLUMBIA, Mo. – The William Woods University Men's Soccer team was defeated by Columbia College, 1-0, in American Midwest Conference Quarterfinal action on Saturday afternoon.
The Owls and Cougars were tied at shots at 12-12 in the contest, however, the Cougars edged WWU, 7-3, on shots on goal.
Jesse Jordan led the Owls with four shots in the contest.
Conor Cable recorded six saves in the contest.
With the loss, the Owls are eliminated from the AMC Men's Soccer Tournament.
Game Flow
The Owls looked to strike early in the contest against the third seed Columbia, as they had a corner kick 30 seconds into the contest. Forty-five seconds later,
Brett Hodges had the first shot for the Owls, but the shot went wide.
Five minutes after Hodges' shot, WWU was on the move attacking the Cougars goal.
Rodrigo Alves, the Owls leader in goals, had a shot on the Cougars goal but Iain McTurk recorded the save. Ten minutes after the Alves' shot, the Owls had a corner kick and it lead to a shot by
Jordan Henderson but his shot was blocked.
Lendell Louis-Jacques had a shot on goal with 26:15 left in the first half and again McTurk made the save keeping the game scoreless.
After the Cougars slow offensive start, Columbia's first two shots went high of goal. Columbia broke the scoreless tie less than nine minutes before halftime, when Dan Reilly found Michael Mayberry for a goal. This put the Cougars ahead, 1-0, which they would take into halftime.
Columbia came out in the second half and had two shots on goal by Mayberry and Zachary Felz and Cable made the saves to keep the game a 1-0 in favor of the Cougars.
Alves looked to get the Owls on the board with 36 minutes left in the game but his shot went wide.
Jesse Bowers followed three minutes later but his shot wen high of the goal.
Columbia kept the pressure on the Owls defense as they continued to get shot attempts on goal but could not get another shot past Cable.
WWU continued to make a push to score the tying goal as with 12 minutes left in the contest,
Jordan Henderson had a shot go high of goal. They kept the pressure on as three minutes later Jordan had a shot on goal that was saved. He followed with a shot that went wide ten seconds later.
The Owls continued to pressure and half a foul with 11 seconds the Owls had a free kick. The Owls took the kick and
Ryan Howell had a shot that went towards the Cougars goal but the ball just missed the net and went wide and the Owls would fall to Columbia, 1-0.
