POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – The William Woods University Women's Basketball dropped its second straight contest as they were defeated by the College of the Ozarks, 70-67, on Monday evening in non-conference action.
The Owls had four players score in double-figures against the Bobcats.
Kaycee Gerald led the team with 19 points in the contest on 6-of-13 shooting.
Kelsey Scherder followed with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
Peyton Greenlee and
Kennedy Volkart followed with 10 points each. Greenlee led the Owls with 10 rebounds in the contest.
The Owls return to action on Thursday, November, 10th when they host Graceland University at 6 p.m. at Anderson Arena. This will be the Owls first home game of the 2016-17 season.
Game Flow
The Owls came out and built a four-point lead, 8-4, after a jumper by
Kelsey Scherder. Trailing by four, the Bobcats answered back scoring the next five points, on a three-pointer by Kelsie Cleeton and a jumper by Kelsie Cleeton put College of Ozarks ahead 9-8. WWU slowly mounted a comeback and took a one point lead, 14-13, after a Volkart jumper. The Owls continued to lead as they took a two-point lead 17-15 lead after the first quarter.
The Owls continued to lead until the 6:21 left in the second quarter as Shelby Roberts hit a jumper tying the game at 21-21. After the game was tied the game stayed close and was tied at 23-23. After the tie, the Owls scored the next seven points, capped by a pair of free throws by
Jasmine Brown. With just under three minutes to go before halftime the Owls led, 30-23. College of the Ozarks battled back trimming the lead to three, but Brown hit a jumper in a paint to extend WWU's lead to five, 34-29, to head into halftime.
Greenlee extended the lead to seven points, 36-29, after a jumper but after her jumper the Owls offense cooled off and the Bobcats offense started to heat up. The Bobcats went on a 11-2 run taking a 40-38 after a pair of free throws by Shelby Roberts. College of the Ozarks continued to extend its lead and it grew to five points, 47-42, after a three-pointer by Cassidy Johnson. The Owls continued to battle and trimmed the lead down to one, 49-48, after a jumper by
Bailey Rollins. The Bobcats closed out the quarter by growing its lead to three, 51-48, on a jumper by Simmerman, to end the third quarter.
College of the Ozarks slow built its lead to 11 points, 59-48, after a jumper by Johnson. The Owls and Bobcats continued to trade baskets and with 4:39 left in the fourth quarter, the Owls found themselves down 64-53. The Owls continued to battle and only allowed the Bobcats to score six more points in the contest. The Owls went on a 9-0 run capped by a Scherder three putting the Owls down four, 64-60. After cutting the lead down to four, the Bobcats grew the lead back to six with 2:27 left in the contest.
WWU continued to find itself down by four or more points until there were under 15 seconds remaining in the game. Gerald hit a pair of free throws cutting the lead to four, 69-65. After, Johnson hit one free throw, the Owls found itself down five, 70-65, Gerald hit a layup putting the Owls down three, 70-67, with three seconds to play. The Owls forced a turnover and Greenlee had a game-tying three-point attempt but the shot did not fall and the Owls were defeated 70-67.
