HANNIBAL, Mo. – The William Woods Men's Basketball Team won its fifth game in a row on Tuesday evening when they defeated Hannibal-LaGrange University, 81-79, in American Midwest Conference action.
Jonny Woolf led the Owls with 25 points, including five-of-seven from behind the arc.
Torin Washington followed with 21 points, on 10-of-13 shooting.
Trey Mitchell rounded out the double-figure scorers with 13 points.
Brandon Vice led the Owls with nine rebounds in the game.
The Owls return to action on Wednesday, December 14th when they travel to Russellville, Arkansas when they play Arkansas Tech University in an exhibition contest. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
Game Flow
In a highly contest, the Owls and Trojans were locked in a highly-contested game for the entire contest. Five straight points by
Jonny Woolf, within the first three minutes, put the Owls ahead 7-5. The lead traded hands and with the Owls down, 8-7, WWU scored the next six points, taking a 13-8 lead with 14:34 left in the first half.
The Trojans answered right taking a 14-13 lead over the Owls. William Woods looked as if it was slowly starting to gain momentum as they built a six-point lead, 26-20, after an old fashion three-point play by
Torin Washington, with 8:43 left in the first half.
The Owls lead shrunk to one point multiple times late in the first half, but a layup by
Trey Mitchell put the Owls back to six points, 36-30, with 1:47 left in the first half. The Trojans continued to battle and cut the Owls lead down to one point, 40-39, heading to halftime.
Hannibal-LaGrange came out on fire to start the second half as they scored 11 of the first 13 points in the half taking an eight-point lead, 50-42, after a three-pointer by De'Shawn Terrell. However, the Owls stormed right back scoring eight straight capped by a Mitchell three-pointer tied the game at 50-50 with 14:59 left in the game.
After tying the game, the Trojans answered the Owls runs with a run of their own as they scored nine straight as Demetrius Early hit three straight three-pointers. The Owls continued to chip away at the contest, as
Alec Mulvihill layup put the Owls down 61-56, with 10:27 left in the contest.
William Woods continued to battle and the Owls continued trailed by one point, 68-67, after a three-pointer by Woolf. The Trojans grew its lead back to three points, 72-69, after a Terrell jumper in the paint with 5:13 to go in the game.
The Owls took the lead with 4:06 left in the contest after a jumper by Mitchell scored in the paint. Mitchell's shot put the Owls ahead 73-72. After Mitchell's shot gave the Owls the lead, the lead traded hands five different times. The last lead came with Washington hit a jumper putting the Owls ahead 80-79. The Trojans missed one shot and committed a turnover over the final minute of the contest and Woolf hit a free throw giving the Owls an 81-79 victory over the Trojans.
