Softball Powers Past Bacone

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University softball team got back in the win column on Sunday when they swept Bacone College in a doubleheader. The Owls won game one, 8-7, in nine innings before defeating Bacone, 10-2, in five innings.
 
Game One
Game Flow

The Warriors jumped on the Owls starting pitcher in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on second and third, Kylar Foshee doubled to left field scoring one. Bacone scored one more run in the inning taking a 2-0 lead.
 
With one out, Sierra Jacques and Alli Massey hit back-to-back singles. Alexi Cavins doubled home Jacques and Massey came in to score on a misplayed grounder tying the game at 2-2. However, the Warriors took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Bacone scored two more runs in the second on a Brittany Foshee double. After two innings of play, WWU trailed 4-2.
 
Bacone extended its lead to 6-2, after scoring one run each in the third and fourth inning of action. However, the Owls answered back in the top of the fifth inning. William Woods scored five runs on six hits in the fifth inning. Bouchey came up big for the Owls in the inning, as she hit a three run home run and putting the Owls down, 6-5. The Owls added two more runs and took a 7-6 lead after five innings.
 
The Warriors came back tying the game at 7-7 after Loni Prouse scored on a squeeze bunt. After tying the game at 7-7, the Owls looked to break the tie in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, the Owls loaded the bases but could not get a run across the plate.
 
Bacone loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rhiannon Bean hit into a fielder's choice keeping the game tied at 7-7. Marcell McMoore grounded into another fielder's choice and the Owls got a force out at home. The inning came to an end with a line out to second base, and sending the game to extra innings.
 
The Owls broke the tie in the top of the ninth inning. With the bases loaded, Brailee Schulte drew a walk and Sierra Jacques scored putting the Owls ahead 8-7. William Woods kept the Bacone's off the scoreboard in the ninth inning and took game one, 8-7.

Game Flow

The Owls offense came out swinging in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Beth Begemann took a 0-1 pitch out to right field for a two run home run.
 
Bacone came back tying the game in the bottom of the second inning. With two runners on base, Brittany Smith doubled to center field, scoring two tying the game.
 
William Woods broke the game open in the top of the third inning as the Owls scored five runs on four hits. With the bases loaded, Bouchey drew a bases loaded walk scoring one. WWU continued to add runs and a double by Alexi Cavins scored two runs for the Owls. After the top of the third inning, WWU led 7-2.
 
The Owls continued to add to their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Begemann drove in her third run of the game when she singled to right field. Bouchey followed with a RBI single extending the lead to 9-2. The Owls added one more inning and took its eight run lead, 10-2, into the bottom of the fourth.
 
The Warriors tried to comeback in the bottom of fourth inning. With one out, the Bacones loaded the bases. However, they could not score a run and the Owls remained at 8 runs, 10-2.
 
The Owls closed out the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one on and one out, the next two Warriors were retired and William Woods defeated Bacone, 10-2, by the mercy rule.

The Owls return to action on Thursday March, 3th when they host Missouri Valley College. First-pitch is set for 1 p.m. for the Owls home opener.
