Owls Falls to Saints in NAIA National Championship First Round

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The William Woods University Women's Basketball season came to an end on Wednesday afternoon as the Owls were defeated by Our Lake of the Lake University, 82-52, in first round action of the NAIA National Championship.
 
Senior Julia Wells led the Owls as she scored 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field. She also collected 17 rebounds to collect a double-double in the contest. Bailey Rollins, April Gebke and Marissa Webb added seven points each for the Owls in the contest. WWU shot 33 percent from the floor in the contest.

With the win for Our Lady of the Lake, they extend its winning streak to 30 games. 
 
Game Flow
The Saints opened the game the game by scoring 10 of the first 12 points as they held the Owls to 1-of-6 shooting in the first quarter. The Owls did not help themselves as they committed 13 turnovers in the first ten minutes of action After the first quarter the Owls found themselves down 18, 23-5.
 
Our Lady of the Lake grew the lead to 21 points, 29-8, early in the second quarter after a fast break layup by Alyssa Ward. After the layup the Owls went on a 9-0 run trimming the Saints lead down to 12 points, 29-17. Kennedy Volkart capped the run with a jumper in the paint. The Owls could not get the lead any closer and the Saints extended its lead to 15, 37-22, at halftime.
 
Over the first three minutes of the third quarter, the Saints stretched its lead back to 22 points, 46-24, after a Taylor Hamilton three-pointer. The lead grew to as many as 27 points, 59-32, in the third quarter. The Owls could not mount a comeback as the teams traded shots in the rest of the quarter and the Owls trialed, 62-37, after the third quarter.
 
William Woods didn't make a run against the top team in the championship as the Saints continued to add to its lead and defeated the Owls by 30 points, 82-52, in the first round.
