Baseball Swept by Park on Friday

PARKVILLE, Mo. – The William Woods University Baseball team were defeated in both games of its doubleheader against Park University on Friday afternoon. The Pirates battled back taking game one, 6-4, and defeated the Owls, 5-2, in the second contest.
 
With the losses, the Owls have now dropped five straight games and are sitting in seventh place in the AMC standings. The Owls are sitting one game behind sixth place, Williams Baptist with one game to play.
 
The Pirates and Owls return to action on Saturday, April 30th when they close its three game American Midwest Conference series. First-pitch is set for 12 p.m.
 
Game One
Game Flow

William Woods offense came out swinging in the first inning. After a Neal Aherin walk to start the contest, Nolan Aherin collected a bunt single to the pitcher to get two runners on for the Owls. After a fly out for the first out, Jordan Dey came up and singled up the middle for an RBI single putting the Owls ahead, 1-0.
 
WWU extended its lead to 3-0 in the top of the third. Drew May led off with a walk and Tanner Wetrich followed with a bunt single putting two runners on. Neal Aherin loaded the bases for the Owls with a bunt single. After a line out, Ryan Phillips reached on a fielder's choice and on the play Wetrich and May came into score putting the Owls ahead 3-0
 
The Pirates struck back and tied the game in the third. With two outs and the bases loaded, Jacob Guilianelli got Rafael Torres-Castillo to hit a ground ball to second base, however, an error advanced everyone up a base and allowed a run to score. The following hitter Carlos Delgadillo singled through the left side scoring two more and tying the game at 3-3.
 
Park took its first lead of the contest in the fifth inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Jacob Watt grounded out to second, but on the play Tim Schaareman scoring putting the Pirates ahead 4-3. The Pirates added one more in the inning taking a 5-3 lead.
 
William Woods trimmed the lead down to one, 5-4, in the sixth. With one out Dey singled to center to get the Owls starting. He moved to second on a ground out. Dey would be pitch ran for by Tyler Bracht and Bracht scored on Jansen Smith's single to left field.
 
Park grew the lead back to two, 6-4, in the bottom of the inning as Torres-Casti singled up the middle scoring one. Ethan Smith came in to close the game in the seventh inning and he kept the Owls bats quiet as he retired the first wo before issuing a walk to Wetrich. However,  he struck out the next batter ending the game and giving the Pirates a game one victory, 6-4, over the Owls.

Game Two
Game Flow

After two scoreless innings of game two, the Pirates were the first team to score as they broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. Smith singled up the middle to get a runner on base for the Pirates. After a strikeout he stole second base. After Owls starter, John Cavness got a pop out for the second out of the inning, Schaareman singled through the left side scoring one and putting the Pirates ahead, 1-0.
 
The Owls answered right back in the top of the fourth inning. Neal Aherin singled to third on a bunt to and advanced to third on a Park throwing error. With one out, Jordan Dey hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Neal Aherin tying the game at 1-1.
 
After a scoreless fifth inning, Park took the lead and never looked back in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded, Cavness threw a wild pitch scoring one from third and putting Park ahead 2-1. Park extended its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning as they scored three runs on four hits in the inning growing its lead to 5-1.
 
The Owls could not get its bats going in the eighth inning trailing, 5-1. The Pirates retired the first two hitters of the inning and after issuing a walk, got Neal Aherin to ground out to end the inning.
 
The Owls came down to its last at bat in the top of the ninth inning. With one out, Dey reached on a throwing error and on the play reached second base. A ground out moved Dey to third base but now the Owls found itself down to the final out of the game. Jansen Smith reached on the Pirates second error of the inning scoring Dey. However, that would be all the Owls would get as Grant Garrett lined out to end the game and the Owls dropped game two, 5-2.
