BETHANY, Okla. – The William Woods University Soccer Team captured its first victory of the 2016 season as they defeated Southwestern Christian University, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon.

The Owls outshot the Eagles, 15-12 for the contest but were even on shots on the goal with eight. Scoring for the Owls was
Shelby Wiebe and
Renee Meyer.

The Owls return to action on Wednesday, September 7th when they open up its home schedule against Central Methodist University at 7 p.m.

Game Flow
The Owls and Eagles came out looking to get the offenses going early in the contest as within the first two minutes of the contest, both goalkeepers had to make saves to keep the game scoreless.
Halle Schroeder fired the shot for the Owls that was saved by Kaylie Naumann. Two minutes after Schroeder's shot was saved, she fired another shot that went high.

With just under the 40 minutes remaining in the half, Jahira Serrano took a shot that
Rebecca Sturgess saved. Forty seconds after Serrano's shot was saved,
Shelby Wiebe fired a shot wide of goal.

Southwestern Christian broke the scoreless tie with 24 minutes remaining in the half. On a long clearance pass by Sidney Hines, Nicole Slade took the pass and beat Sturgess putting the Eagles ahead, 1-0.

The Owls answered the Eagles score with 5:44 left in the half, as WWU had a long free kick that was taken by
Kailyn Graham. Graham found Wiebe who found the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1. William Woods had another shot to score in the half, as
Hailey LaCroix had a shot that the Eagles saved. The game went into halftime tied at 1-1.

Southwestern Christian came out firing to start the second half as Kenzie Decamp fired a shot that was saved by Sturgess. After the Eagles, shot the Owls had the next four shots on the, with two shots going wide and the Eagles making two saves. On the last shot, Southwestern Christian was called for a foul in the box and a yellow card and the Owls had a penalty kick.
Renee Meyer took the penalty kick and scored putting the Owls ahead, 2-1.

Both teams continued attack and both teams had multiple scoring opportunities after the penalty kick but the goalies did not allow another goal and the Owls came away with a 2-1 victory over Southwestern Christian.
