ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The William Woods University men's basketball team dropped its American Midwest Conference contest on Saturday afternoon to Harris-Stowe State University, 76-65. The Owls shot 35.6 percent from the floor in the loss.
Torin Washington led the Owls with 26 points on 11-of-20 shooting.
Jonny Woolf followed with 19 points to round out the double-figure scorers. Woolf led the Owls with 10 rebounds to collect a double-double in the contest. WWU shot 70.4 percent (19-of-27) from the free throw line in the contest.
WWU returns to action on Thursday, February 2nd when they host Hannibal-LaGrange University in AMC action. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
Game Flow
William Woods offense came out struggling to score in the contest as over the first six minutes of the contest, WWU was held to two points. During that time, Harris-Stowe scored eight points, capped by a Jalen Fletcher jumper.
Torin Washington hit the first field goal for the Owls trimming the Hornets lead down to three, 8-5, with 12:34 left in the half.
Harris-Stowe grew its lead back to seven points, 14-7, after a pair of free throws by Evans Ganapamo. William Woods continued to battle and a three-pointer by
Jonny Woolf the Owls trailed 14-11, with 9:03 left in the half. After trimming the lead down to three, the Hornets answered back growing its lead to double-figures, 23-13, with 6:01 left in the half.
William Woods continued to battle and after a pair of free throws by
Darrien Dickey, the Owls trailed by five, 24-19. William Woods had the lead down to three points prior the Hornets extending the lead to eight points, 32-24, heading into halftime.
Harris-Stowe came out and scored the first 10 points of the second half growing its lead to 18 points, 42-24, after a Trevor Roberts three-pointer. William Woods continued to claw its way back into the contest and with 14:18 left in the game, WWU trailed by 11, 46-35, after a Washington jumper.
The Hornets lead was down to eight points, 49-41, after another jumper by Washington with 12:36 left in the contest. Harris-Stowe answered and grew the lead back to 13, 54-41, after a Trevor Roberts three-pointer.
After Roberts' three, the Owls scored the next seven points, capped by a
Jonny Woolf three-pointer brining the Owls within six, 54-48. The Owls continued to battle and a Woolf jumper in the paint, WWU trailed by four, 56-52.
After trimming the lead down to four, Harris-Stowe extended its lead back to 12 points, 65-53, after a pair of free throws by Tyrone Alston. The Hornets were not done growing its lead as it got to as many 16 points, 72-56, with 2:44 left in the contest. William Woods could not come back and dropped the contest to Harris-Stowe, 76-65.
