ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team defeated the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State University, 65-58, in the American Midwest Conference Game of the Week on Saturday afternoon.
Jasmine Brown led the owls with 17 points.
April Gebke and
Kennedy Volkart followed with 12 points each. Both Brown and Volkart recorded double-doubles in the contest as they had 10 and 11 rebounds respectfully.
WWU returns to action on Thursday, February 2nd when they host Hannibal-LaGrange University in AMC action. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
Game Flow
The Owls and Hornets were locked in a highly-contested AMC battle on Saturday afternoon. A three-pointer by
Kelsey Scherder gave the Owls a one point lead, 10-9, with 6:52 left in the first quarter. The lead would go back and forth over the next couple of minutes and four-straight points by
Jasmine Brown put the Owls ahead, 17-14. The Owls and Hornets traded baskets and after one quarter of play, the Owls led 19-16.
Harris-Stowe continued to battle and a basket by Shaye Barrett the Owls found themselves down 22-21. WWU came back and a three by
Peyton Greenlee WWU led 24-22. Harris-Stowe tied the game at 24-24 after a jumper by Maronda Evans. After the jumper neither team scored for the next two minutes of the contest. After the teams began scoring again, they traded leads over the final three minutes of the half and with the Owls down 29-27,
Kennedy Volkart hit a jumper tying the game. Volkart put the Owls ahead, 31-29, after hitting a pair of free throws, with 30 seconds remaining in the first half. WWU took a 31-29, lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Owls grew its lead to five points, 38-33, after a Brown jumper in the paint with 7:18 left in the quarter. The Owls lead grew to seven before the Hornets slowly started chipping away. Over the next four minutes of the quarter, Harris-Stowe had the lead down to one, 40-39, before the Owls closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run taking a 46-39 lead after three quarters of play.
William Woods and Harris-Stowe matched baskets opening the fourth quarter of play and after a Brown jumper, WWU led by seven. Harris-Stowe continued to chip away at the Owls lead and after a Dynesha Powell jumper, the Owls lead was down to three, 48-45. Each time the Hornets made a run, the Owls answered and WWU slowly extended its lead to 10 points, 57-47, after a pair of free throws by
Kaycee Gerald. William Woods did not let the Hornets get closer than seven points the remainder of the contest and the Owls would come away with a 65-58 victory over Harris-Stowe.
The win for the Owls was its 14th victory of the season and the 11th in AMC action. WWU now has won three-straight games.
