Volleyball Extends Winning Streak to 16

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University volleyball team won its 16th straight contest on Monday evening with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-15, 25-17) over College of the Ozarks in non-conference action.
 
Abby Ferguson led the Owls with 11 kills while Rayleen Rivera followed with nine. Brittney Engelbrecht dished out 38 assists in the match. Jessica Jensen led the Owls with 20 digs. WWU recorded 12 blocks in the match.
 
WWU returns to action Friday, October 13 when they travel to Des Moines, Iowa to participate in the Grand View University Tournament. The Owls play No. 15 Montana Tech at 1 p.m. on Friday and University of Saint Francis (Ind.) at 5 p.m. on Friday.
 
Game Flow
The Owls had fallen behind in the first set finding themselves down by three, 8-5. After a kill by Ferguson, the Owls tied the set at 8-8. The Bobcats were persistent in keeping their lead, scoring another five points before Kira Krebill would add a kill, ending the long stretch for the Bobcats with College of the Ozarks ahead 14-10. The Owls would continue to chip away then go point for point until the Owls found themselves behind once again, 21-18. The Owls would be able to squeeze out one more point before the Bobcats ran away with set one, 25-19.
 
In set two, the Owls would score the first two points. The Bobcats would fight back and eventually take the lead, 6-4. Possession would bounce between the two teams, both fighting to take the lead. Big blocks came from Kira Krebill and Kate Doerhoff, and timely kills came from Doerhoff and Tory Wiley and the Owls took set two, 25-21.
 
With the match tied at one a piece, the offense for both teams came out to battle point for point, until a block from Wiley and Ferguson would start a rally for the Owls. Under the service of Brooke Reed, Rayleen Rivera, Ferguson, and Brittney Engelbrecht would add kills of their own and Ferguson and Rivera would also add a block for the Owls putting WWU ahead, 12-5. Later in the set, the Bobcats would cut the lead to two points, 13-11. The Owls would go on another rally adding kills from Rivera, Krebill, and Doerhoff and grew its lead to 20-11. The Bobcats would add three points before the Owls threatened with set point, and Wiley would shut it down with a kill. WWU took set three, 25-15.
 
With two sets under their belt, the Owls would take advantage of Bobcat mishaps and under the service run of Jessica Jensen, the Owls added two kills from Wiley and Ferguson as well as a timely block by Ferguson and Doerhoff taking an early 11-2 lead. The Bobcats would cut the lead to six points before a kill by Krebill would put the Owls ahead by a score of 18-9. The Bobcats would give the Owls a run for their money as they went on a run of three points, cutting the lead down to five, 22-17. The Owls defense would defend their lead as Brittney Engelbrecht and Krebill ended the fourth set with big blocks and the Owls clinched that match with a 25-17 fourth set victory.
