COLUMBIA, Ky. – Making its first ever national championship appearance, the William Woods University men's soccer team was defeated by the seventh seed Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon.
Rodrigo Alves and
Anthony Moscatello scored the goals for the Owls in the contest. WWU was outshot in the contest 22-8.
The conclude the season with a 13-4-3 overall record. The 13 wins is a single season school record.
Game Flow
The Blue Raiders had a scoring chance within the first ten minutes of the contest when Andres Riquelme had a shot go off the crossbar. Four seconds later, Tyler Collishaw followed with a shot wide of goal. WWU countered when
Anthony Moscatello had a shot go wide.
With 28:55 left in the first half, Lindsey Wilson's Mutaya Mwape had a shot go off the cross bar keeping the game scoreless. Seven minutes later, the Blue Raiders had a free kick. Spencer Moeller took the kickoff and it was headed in by Tyler Collishaw putting the Blue Raiders ahead, 1-0.
Six minutes later, the Blue Raiders added to its lead when Stephane Dasse, found Andres Riquelme who put a shot past
Conor Cable putting Lindsey Wilson ahead, 2-0. Lindsey Wilson added one more goal in the first half when Riquelme scored his second goal of the game. WWU trailed 3-0 at halftime.
Lindsey Wilson came out looking to score in the second half, as they had two shots that went wide and high of goal. Two minutes later,
Darren Wilson had a shot for the Owls that went high of goal keeping the Blue Raiders in front, 3-0.
Following Wilson's shot,
Roberto Duro Sanchez had a shot that go blocked. The Blue Raiders countered and Stephane Dasse had a shot hit the crossbar. Mwape followed with a shot wide with 21:57 left in the contest.
With under 10 to go in the contest, Wilson took a free kick and found
Alberto Pitarch in the box but Pitarach header went wide of goal. A minute later, the Owls scored its first goal of the contest when the Owls sent a cross across the box and
Rodrigo Alves found the back of the net putting the Owls down 3-1.
The Blue Raiders added its fourth goal of the contest after a foul was called by the Owls in the box. Collishaw took the penalty kick, which Cable saved, but the rebound was headed in by Collishaw putting the Blue Raiders ahead 4-1.
The Owls scored its second goal of the contest, when
Darren Wilson found
Anthony Moscatello who scored the goal for the Owls with 3:43 left in the contest.
The Blue Raiders answered with one more goal and the Owls were defeated 5-2 in the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Opening Round.
