Women’s Soccer Falls to Northwestern Ohio, 5-0, In Opening Round

DAYTON, Ohio – Making its second national championship appearance and first since 2014, the William Woods University women's soccer team was defeated, 5-0, by the defending NAIA National Champions University of Northwestern Ohio in the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship Opening Round contest.
 
WWU was outshot 27-1 in the contest and 13-0 on shots on goal. WWU's lone shot came from Shelby Scanlan. Rebecca Sturgess led the Owls with six saves in the contest.
 
The Owls conclude its season with a 13-6-3 on the season.
 
Game Flow
The Racers got the offense started quickly as they had three shots in the first eight minutes of the contest but all of their shots went wide or high of goal.
 
With 32:36 left in the first half, Shelby Scanlan had the Owls first shot of the game. Her shot went high of goal. After her shot, the Racers went down the field and scored the first goal of the contest when Bogca Horvath found Camilla Anderson for the first goal of the contest.
 
After Northwestern Ohio's goal, the Racers offense continued to attack the Owls. Rikke Sevecke had a shot that Rebecca Sturgess saved. Two minutes later, Evdokia Popadinova had a shot go off the post. A couple of minutes later, Laura Condon had a shot that Sturges saved keeping the game, 1-0.
 
The Racers had one more shot on goal that was saved by Sturgess and the Owls trailed 1-0 at halftime.
 
Northwestern Ohio came out scoring early in the second half. After a Horvath shot went off the post, the Racers came back and scored when Robyn Moodaly found Camilla Anderson for the Racers second goal of the contest.
 
The Racers kept the pressure on as they had a shot high, the Owls had a team save and Sturgess had another save keeping the game set at 2-0. Eight minutes after the Racers second goal, they scored its third goal when Moodaly beat Sturgess extending its lead to 3-0.
 
The lead went to 4-0 with 24:17 left in the contest when Evdokia Popadinova scored on a pass from Romane Salvador. The Racers kept the offensive pressure on the Owls as Kaitlynn Gronas and Anna Fisker had shots on goal that Arianna Meikel, who came in for Sturgess, made the save.
 
Northwestern Ohio added one more goal with 4:19 left in the contest when Fisker scored extending the game to 5-0, which ended being the final score.
