FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team defeated Lyon College, 4-2, in the AMC Quarterfinals on Friday night.
Claire Stark scored two of the Owls four goals in the contest. Shelby Scanlan and Colleen Bayer added the two others for the Owls. WWU outshot the Scots, 20-9, in shots in the contest.
With the win the Owls advanced to the AMC Semifinals. WWU will host third seed Park University at Firley Field on Monday, November 6th. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Game Flow
WWU wasted little time jumping on the Scots in the AMC Quarterfinals matchup. On the Owls first shot of the contest, Aurora Henriksen found Jenna Vogt who sent a pass to Shelby Scanlan for the first goal of the contest.
Nine minutes later, the Owls grew its lead to 2-0 after Scanlan found Claire Stark for a shot and goal as she beat Claire Coley. WWU's Scanlan had two more scoring chances to extend the Owls lead but Coley made a save and the Scots made a team save keeping the game 2-0.
With 21:16 before half, the Scots added its first goal of the game when Judith Flores took a pass from Joyce Barbosa and scored the first goal for the Scots. Fifteen minutes later, the Scots Barbosa tied the game at 2-2 after she scored a goal. The game went 2-2 into halftime.
WWU retook the lead in the second half with 32:14 left in the second half, when Stark added her second goal of the contest. WWU continued putting pressure on the Scots defense as they had a few shots go high or wide.
The Owls grew its lead to 4-2 with 22:38 left in the contest when Scanlan got into the right side of the box and found Colleen Bayer in front of the goal who beat Coley putting the Owls ahead 4-2.
After the Owls took its two-goal lead, it looked as if Lyon had its third goal of the game but Barbosa's shot went off the post keeping the Owls ahead by two.
WWU and the Scots had its opportunities to score late in the contest, but neither team would score again and the Owls came away with a 4-2 victory to advance to the AMC Semifinals.
