LAWRENCE, Kan. – DaShaun Stark scored a season-high 34 points as he led the William Woods University Men's Basketball team past Haskell Indian Nations University, 75-67, on Monday evening. Stark's 34 points is the second most points scored in a single game in WWU school history.
Following Starks 34 points outing was
Brandon Vice, who scored 14 points.
Shad Kimble rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points. WWU (5-6) shot 46.2 percent from the floor in the contest and made 26-of-30 free throws in the game.
WWU returns to action on Thursday, October 14th when they travel to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas to face Williams Baptist College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
Game Flow
Over the first seven minutes of the opening half, the Owls came out and jumped to an early seven-point lead, 11-4, after a
DaShaun Stark jumper in the paint. Following Stark's jumper, Haskell battled back trimming the Owls lead down to four, 11-7.
William Woods again stretched its lead back out by Haskell continued to keep the game close and a jumper by Tristian Keah-Tigh put the Indians down three, 15-12, with 9:01 left in the half. Over the next five minutes of the contest, the Owls went on an 11-0 run taking a lead of 14, 26-12, after a
Brandon Vice jumper.
The Owls grew the lead to as many as 17 points in the first half before Haskell battled back to trail by 11, 30-19, after a three-point play by Nakia Hendricks. WWU grew the lead back to 14, 34-20, heading into halftime.
Over the first two minutes of the second half, the Owls stretched the lead to 18 points, 40-22, after a layup by Stark. After leading by 18, the Owls and Indians traded baskets before Haskell hit two three-pointers taking the Owls lead down to 12, 42-30.
WWU continued to lead by double-figures in the second half and a layup by Stark with 12:17 left in the contest, the Owls were ahead by 15, 50-35. After Starks layup the Indians scored the next seven points and cut the Owls lead down to single digits, 50-42, with 10:51 left in the contest.
Each time the Owls stretched the lead to double-figures, Haskell rebounded and brought the game back to single figures. WWU led by 11, 58-47, after a Stark jumper in the paint. The next trip down for the Indians, A'Ram Johnson hit a three-pointer putting the Owls lead down to eight, 58-50.
Johnson's three was the start of eight straight points for Haskell and with 5:19 left in the contest, the Owls led by three, 58-55. WWU continued to lead and a layup by
Darrien Dickey put WWU ahead, 63-56, with 3:10 to go in the contest.
The Owls did not see a lead over double-figures until Stark hit a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left in the contest, which put WWU ahead, 71-61. Haskell had the Owls lead down to six, 73-67, with 10 seconds remaining in the game, Vice hit a pair of free throws to clinch the game for WWU. William Woods came away with a 75-67 victory over Haskell.
