BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The William Woods University men's basketball team defeated Lindenwood University-Belleville, 90-77, on Tuesday night in American Midwest Conference action. With the win the Owls improve to 17-10 on the season.
William Woods had four players score in double-figures as
Trey Mitchell led the way with 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting.
Brandon Vice and
DaShaun Stark followed with 15 points apiece.
Jonny Woolf rounded out the double-figure scorers with 14 points. Vice led the Owls with eight rebounds in the contest. WWU shot 56.1 percent from the floor.
WWU returns to action on Thursday, February 16 when they host Williams Baptist College at Anderson Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
Game Flow
The Lynx jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead over the Owls in the first minute and 10 seconds of the contest, however, WWU battled back and a jumper by
Brandon Vice tied the game at 8-8 with 14:52 left in the first half. Thirty seconds later,
Jonny Woolf gave the Owls its first lead of the contest, 11-10, after hitting a three-pointer.
Lindenwood-Belleville came back taking the lead, 12-11, but a three by
DaShaun Stark started a 15-3 run for the Owls. Stark capped the run with a jumper in the paint and with 9:50 left in the half, the Owls led 26-15. WWU continued to extend its lead and after back-to-back threes by
Trey Mitchell, the Owls led by 16 points, 36-20, with just over seven minutes remaining in the half.
After leading by 16, the Lynx closed the first half by chipping away at the Owls lead and after an old-fashion three-point play by David Shepard, the Owls lead had shrunk to six, 40-34. WWU grew the lead back to double-digits and at halftime WWU led the Lynx, 45-35.
Over the first five minutes of the second half, the Owls grew the lead to 17 points, 56-39, after a pair of free throws by Woolf. William Woods was not done as the lead grew to 23 points, 64-41, after a jumper by Vice.
Like the first half, the Lynx did not go away easily as they slowly started chipping away at the Owls lead. With 7:08 left in the contest, the Owls saw its lead shrink to 13 points, 70-57. WWU's lead continued to get shrink as a three-point play by Jacobby Anderson put the Owls lead down to eight, 81-73, with 2:24 left in the half.
The Owls did not let the Lynx get any closer and the Owls went 8-for-8 from the free throw line in the last 90 seconds of the game to seal the victory. William Woods defeated the Lynx by 13, 90-77.
