Softball Drops Two to No. 20 Central Methodist

FULTON, Mo. - The William Woods University softball team was defeated by No. 20 Central Methodist University on Sunday afternoon. The Owls were defeated in game one 15-1 and game two by a score of 15-4.
 
Brailee Schulte, Hannah Campbell, Alli Massey led the Owls with three hits in the doubleheader. Campbell and Madison McCormick led the way with two RBIs each.
 
WWU returns to action on Saturday, February 25 when they travel Bartlesville, Oklahoma to face Oklahoma Wesleyan University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
 
Game One
Game Flow

The Owls came out defensively against the Eagles and the Owls sat Central Methodist down in order. The Owls had left two runners on base their first time at the plate and after the first inning, the Owls and Eagles were tied at 0-0.
 
It was not until the bottom of the second that the Owls had put a run on the board. Amanda Bouchey reached on a walk and teammate Olivia Imhoff hit a shot to the left side of the infield advancing Bouchey. Hannah Campbell followed with a single up the middle scoring Bouchey, putting WWU ahead 1-0.
 
The Eagles then answered back in the top of the third stringing hits together and using Owl errors to their advantage, scoring four and taking a 4-1 lead over William Woods. The Owls would struggle with timely hits and could not string another run across the board. It was not until the fifth inning when the Eagles would score again, capitalizing on Owl errors, extending its lead to 5-1, over the Owls. The seventh inning put the nail in the coffin for the Owls when the Eagles scored eight runs taking a 15-1 lead. WWU did not have an answer in the bottom of the frame and were defeated 15-1.

Game Two
Game Flow

The Owls offense was on the first time at the plate, to open game two. Dacrie Depping reached on a walk and was advanced to third on a single from Brailee Schulte putting runners on first and third. Beth Begemann singled up the middle, scoring Depping and put Schulte in scoring position. Alli Massey hit another shot up the middle scoring Schulte and Begemann in scoring position. Sierra Jacques reached on a walk, loading the bases but the Owls would stop there, scoring two, and leaving two on base.
 
The Owls would score two more in the bottom of the second after Campbell hit a double with two outs. Depping reached on a wild throw on a dropped third strike, and Campbell scored. Brailee Schulte doubled deep right field line, scoring Depping, but was caught stretching and was out at third base, and after two innings were complete the Owls led 4-0.
 
The Eagles would answer back after the Owls started committing errors, scoring three in the top of the third, 4-3. The Eagles would then add insurance runs in the fourth.  With the bases loaded, reaching on two walks and a single, with Alyssa Lilly up to bat. With two outs and a 2-2 count, Lilly ripped a shot to deep center where her ball hit the top of the fence and popped over the fence, crediting her with a grand slam, and putting the Eagles ahead, 7-4. The Eagles would score four more in the fifth, taking a 11-4 lead.
 
The Owls would add another run in the sixth when Sierra Jaqcues reached on a bunt. Madison McCormick would reach on a walk. Alexi Cavins would single to right, scoring Jacques, but would be the only run that inning, and the Owls found themselves down 11-5.
 
The Eagles would score two more in the seventh and take a 13-5 lead over the Owls. In the bottom of the inning, the Owls battled and with two runners on and two outs, McCormick doubled home two runs for the Owls cutting the led down to 13-7. That would be all the Owls would get as they dropped game two, 13-7.
