HENDERSON, Tenn. – The William Woods University softball team was swept by Freed-Hardeman University in the AMC Open Round on Friday afternoon. The Owls dropped game one, 2-0, and game two, 2-0.

With the losses, the Owls are eliminated from the AMC Tournament. The Owls finish the season with 27-22 on the season.

Game One

After a scoreless first inning, the Owls came out in the top of the second inning when
Alli Massey and
Brailee Schulte hit back to back singles with two outs. However, they could not get across the plate as the next Owl hitter was retired to end the inning.

The Lions would also make some noise of their own in the bottom of the second inning when Makenzie Prince hit a leadoff double. Prince advanced to third base on a fielder's choice putting runners on the corner. After a groundout, Kristen Hunsicker singled scoring Prince putting the Lions ahead, 1-0.

It would not be until the top of the fourth that the Owls would get another base runner.
Amanda Bouchey singled to center, but
Beth Begemann reached on a fielder's choice forcing Bouchey out, ending the threat for the Owls.

The Owls defense would come up big in the bottom of the fourth inning as they would stop a Lions threat. Freed-Hardeman had runners on second and third with two outs, but could not get a run across the board as
Sierra Jacques got Hunsicker to pop out to end the inning.

The Lions would score their next time around when Morgan Warren was hit by pitch and would find her way home, ultimately stealing home putting the Lions ahead, 2-0.

With one out,
Dacrie Depping would try to start something in the top of the sixth, as she singled to right field. Makenzie Prince would keep the Owls at bay forcing groundouts and collecting eight Owl strikeouts, in the contest. After Deppings hit the Owls were retired in order. WWU could not get anything going in the top of the seventh and the Owls dropped game one, 2-0.

The Lions and Owls were locked in a pitcher dual during the second game of the best of three series. Neither teams' offenses could get anything going in the first inning of the game. In the second inning, the Owls got to Owls starter,
Allison Waskow. The Lions hit back to back singles putting two runners on base. Waskow got Jenna Graham to hit into a fielder's choice getting the first out of the inning. Waskow continued to get the Lions out as she got the next two batters to pop out to end the threat.

Alli Massey would be the spark again in the bottom of the second as she collected a single. Schulte would reach on a walk putting two runners on base, but unfortunately the Owls would come up empty.

Allison Waskow and Mallory Spurlock would keep each other off the base paths as the game would go scoreless until the sixth inning. The Owls looked as if they would break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning. With a leadoff single by
Ari Arnold, an executed sacrifice bunt by Bouchey, and a single by McCormick, Arnold would be sixty feet from taking the lead for the Owls. The Owls would not be able to manufacture a run, leaving three on base off two hits.

It would not be until the top of the sixth that the Lions would be able to punch through. Caitlyn Carter would reach on a hit by pitch, but it would be Abbi Gooch that would come around to score off a single by teammate Kaylyn Graham, putting the Lions ahead, 1-0.

The Owls would answer back when
Madison McCormick hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth. With one out,
Brailee Schulte singled to center putting two runners on base. However, the Owls could not get a run across as the next two hitters were retired to end the inning.

The Lions would threaten in the top of the seventh and with bases loaded, looking to score a few insurance runs. Abbi Gooch would hit a single and scored one, extending the Lions lead to 2-0.

The Owls could not get anything going in the bottom of the seventh inning as they were retired in order and the Owls dropped game two, 2-0, and were eliminated from the AMC Tournament.
